Famed atheist Richard Dawkins says he’s a “cultural Christian”

On Easter, the evolutionary biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins was on a British talk radio station, and got the world talking for some pro-Christian remarks.

“I call myself a cultural Christian,” he says. He clarifies: “I’m not a believer.”

The author of the bestselling book The God Delusion wasn’t expected to say anything like that. I’m trying to figure out: What is an atheist cultural Christian?

Dawkins is among the most famous atheists in history.

He was born in 1941, and had an academic career in speculating about biological evolution. Then he began another career in demolishing Christianity. He grew up Anglican, but since an early age was dismissive all things religious, and he thought it was a good idea for most anyone.

In The God Delusion, he calls himself “a deeply religious man,” but from a sense of wonder in the natural world. He seemed to have the soul of a poet—and didn’t need religion for any of that.

In the book he doesn’t call himself ‘culturally Christian’. It became a bestseller…
