As I look over the year in Evangelical sex scandals, a theme emerges? Many key leaders saw their past sins being excavated. It was bad.
That these guys had ever been special divine servants “called” by God came into question — as even Evangelicals were left wondering what the “religion” was all about.
1. A megachurch pastor is outed as a pedophile
In June, a woman stepped forward telling a story. Cindy Clemishire recalled it’d started on Christmas night in 1982. She was 12. A youth pastor, age 20, was being put up in her family’s guest bedroom. He told her to visit his room, and started molesting her. It lasted for five years.
At age 17, she told her parents. They got Robert Morris fired. Two years later, he was back in “ministry,” founding a church in Texas.
Gateway Church grew into a megachurch, as Morris became an author, a T.V. personality and ‘advisor’ to presidential candidate Donald Trump.
