You might of heard of DeepL, that cool company in charge of developing AI solutions for languages and translation businesses. Well, they’ve done it again and launched DeepL Pro, a subscription service for language translation. Thus reaching a new milestone in machine translation services.

Thanks to artificial intelligence and exceptionally well-trained algorithms, the machine translation system of Deep L has been taken to a new level and,has even surpassed, top dog’s Google Translate.

What it basically does is this: the program includes an enhanced web translation service, which doesn’t store any texts translated, guaranteeing total privacy for their clients and users. The DeepL API can be used to integrate language translation into different web and mobile apps.

What are other uses of the DeepL Pro API? Well, it can be used to include language translation chatbots and virtual assistants, website and email language translators, as well as computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools. Neat.

Furthermore, these guys took the time to build a super computer similar to Deep Thought from Hitchhikers Guide in Iceland, which is expertly training neural networks on multilingual and bilingual texts. The thing is highly performant, being able to go through 5.1 petaFLOPS or 5 100 000 000 000 000 operations per second. All of the networks are trained with billions of sentences and tropes and it directly taps into Linguee.

DeepL founder and CEO stated as follows:

“Our neural networks have developed an astounding sense of understanding,(…) Expect further DeepL products to go far beyond translation and change the way you handle text and speech.”

The translator service at DeepL supports a bunch of languages up until now including English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and planning to expand to Mandarin, Japanese, and Russian in the near future.

Better than Google

The online translator of DeepL went online in 2017 and delivers “the world’s best machine translation results”. In March of this year, the neural networks reached a new BLEU record; In addition, DeepL performed better in a blind test than the competition: In the test, 100 sentences were translated by DeepL, Google Translate, Microsoft Translator and Facebook. The pros blindly chose the best translation, with DeepL leading the way in all language pairings.

So what is DeepL hoping to gain from this? Well, expanding the market for one but also consolidating their status as the language and translation solution for businesses and consumers. They are not only hoping to deploy the software which will probably fuel future products such as enhanced live translations, realtime earplugs or performant chatbots, but also shaking their underdog status. And we at Beluga are eager to hear more about it!
