News

Kenyan Edtech startup, Moringa School has secured a round of funding from DOB Equity. The round will be used for regional expansion and to improve its platform, Audrey Cheng disclosed.

Johannesburg-based IDEA Digital Education has won the Social Impact Award at the Apps Africa Innovation Awards. Light Sail Education won the Best Edtech Solution category. The winners will be attending the African Tech Summit holding in Rwanda in 2020. Flutterwave, LORI Systems were other winners at the ceremony.

Haystack Africa is currently expanding access to its online courses to Ghana. Since its launch in February, the platform has had 250 learners sign up and had already expanded to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Opportunities

Google has launched its Google for Startups Accelerator. The accelerator is focused on startups solving problems based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals including poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. Find out more here.

Dr Reuel Khoza, Michael Jordaan and Angelhub Ventures have started the Hlayisani Growth Equity Fund. Recall that earlier in the year, Hlayisani Capital invested in edtech startup, Snapplify. Applications to Hlayisani Capital are currently open.

The Mastercard Foundation has announced a Request for Proposals. Through its Regional Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning in ICT, the Foundation aims to ensure that all students receive the education and training required to secure meaningful and significant work upon graduation. Edtech startups working on accessibility of professional development for in-school teachers should apply. It is also open to startups working on creating and delivering content to secondary school learners.
