News

Olubayo Adekanmbi, convener of Data Science Nigeria, has written the first Artificial Intelligence book for primary and secondary school students. The book was launched at the recent Data Science Nigeria AI Summit held in Lagos. TechCabal has the details here.

Ed-tech startup, Simbi Interactive, has graduated from the second cohort of Honeywell Group’s Itanna programme. The startup received $30,000 in funding from Itanna as well as hands-on advice from experts and mentorship from leading global tech entrepreneurs and industry experts.

Apple has expanded its Everyone Can Code programme. The new update includes a complete redesign of the curriculum to introduce more kids to coding. The new curriculum includes more resources for teachers, a brand new guide for students and updated Swift Coding Club materials. It also integrates Apple’s Everybody Can Create guides.

London ed-tech startup, Pi-top has gone through another round of layoffs. According to the company, the layoffs occurred as a result of restructuring its company to focus on the US education market. TechCrunch

Opportunities

Applications to Cohort 4 of Injini’s Incubation Programme are open till December 10th. Successful ed-tech startups will receive a grant of R100,000 and the opportunity for an investment of up to R1 million. Find more details and apply here.

Google has launched its Google for Startups Accelerator. The accelerator is focused on startups solving problems based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals including poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. Find out more here.

Dr Reuel Khoza, Michael Jordaan and Angelhub Ventures have started the Hlayisani Growth Equity Fund. Recall that earlier in the year, Hlayisani Capital invested in edtech startup, Snapplify. Applications to Hlayisani Capital are currently open.

The Mastercard Foundation has announced a Request for Proposals. Through its Regional Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning in ICT, the Foundation aims to ensure that all students receive the education and training required to secure meaningful and significant work upon graduation. Edtech startups working on accessibility of professional development for in-school teachers should apply. It is also open to startups working on creating and delivering content to secondary school learners.
