What I Do: Jasmine Alkin
Data Engineer
A former Enterprise Applications Engineer at WE, Jasmine joined BenchSci in 2019 as a Data Engineer. Jasmine is passionate about data and data quality, and creating systems to further collection, cleanliness and analysis. What makes her tick after hours? She keeps busy with her in-apartment hydroponics and crocheting (in her own words) “useless but very cute things.”
We interviewed Jasmine to learn more about what she gets up to at the office and why she chose BenchSci as her next adventure.

Describe a day in your life at work.
Having an education in molecular genetics and a career in Data Engineering, working at BenchSci allows me to combine both my passions daily, such as helping plan data structures to accommodate the uniqueness of scientific reagents and automating workflows. The data team and the science team work closely together to create a solid experience for scientists around the world, so this environment allows me to exercise my personal view of coding: that a program should be like a well-designed, documented, and tested experiment.
What is unique about working at BenchSci?
From the billion indoor plants, our glassware being mostly beakers, the transparency from leadership, and the friendly and talented colleagues, BenchSci truly lives up to its values and creates a great physical space to work in, as well. BenchSci not only encourages you to grow in your respective field but offers opportunities to educate and expose employees to the specialized knowledge each team has. At BenchSci, you get the chance to learn about CRISPR-Cas9, review ML journals on the latest advances and talk about memory management within different programming languages.
What would you say to others who are interested in pursuing a new opportunity at BenchSci?
BenchSci is not just a software development company, nor is it a classic scientific company. It sits in a unique niche, where there is a high degree of collaboration between the scientists and developers. BenchSci offers lots of opportunities for you to grow and develop, so make sure you participate in the events to get the most out of it.
