As the world of work continues to change, it is now more important than ever to learn a second language. As companies expand to different parts of the world, companies have a higher need for bilingual employees. I personally am interested in this topic because not only does being bilingual open up the door for you to travel more for work, but it also gives you the opportunity to earn more money. Anyone who is currently in school, especially for business, should take the opportunity to learn a second language so that they too can receive the benefits of being able to communicate in more than one language. Business majors often move on to work for large companies that often times have locations in another country or deal with customers or other companies from another company on a regular basis. I know that employees who are bilingual have the potential to earn more, and being fluent in a second language can also help your memory and brain. One thing I would like to know more about on this topic is how much more on average does a bilingual person earn compared to their non-bilingual counterpart. I’d also like to know what are the most common languages spoken in the business world. A final question I have about this topic is what besides the language itself is important to learn when it comes to having contact with someone who speaks another language. These questions interest me because they can help me plan out the rest of my time here at UB to learn the material that businesses are seeking in their employees. A skill that would help me prepare myself for the change of a growing need for bilingual people is finding out what other language is dominant in the business world, which I could then sign up for next semester and being to learn and practice.
