New York Update #1

I feel like I need to write about all of this right now. I’m sitting/lying in my brand new queen bed with my new sheets and new pillows after a LONG day of walking everywhere anyone has ever walked. I did so much today, and it was flawless. I am so in love with this brand new life I am building. I had a perfect day.

Oh- by the way, I found an apartment in Brooklyn! I’m getting all settled in!

It all started this morning when I woke up around nine and decided to order french toast. Yes, to my door, not at a restaurant. THAT’S WHAT I CAN DO NOW! Obviously not for every meal, but to be honest, I have not made it to the grocery store yet. But I’m going tomorrow. I have a favorite place I like to order from, and I have done it 2–3 times now. They don’t have a minimum and they have free delivery.

Tell me, does it get better than that? The answer is no. Anyway, I ordered my breakfast and ate it in my bed. I need to mention that I love my new bed. It is a queen bed, for one. I have never had a queen bed, and I have always viewed bigger beds as a sign of adulthood and maturity. So yes, I have one now, and that is everything.

After I ate breakfast, I called my parents. My mom is a tech genius, and I have never ordered internet before. We are supposed to get internet installed either Monday or Tuesday, and I realized that I didn’t know if we had the right hookups! So I took pictures of what we did have, and it turns out we are all good. Thanks, Mom.

After a slow morning of breakfast in bed and calling my parents, I took a very nice shower. I say very nice, because until yesterday morning, our showers didn’t have hot water! What the heck am I supposed to do with a cold shower? It’s all fixed now though. HOT water comes through the pipes, and I’m content.

After my shower, I decided it was finally time to go to Staples and get my Grad/Moving announcements printed. I created them four days ago and have been meaning to get them printed, but it’s just such a job! I had to find the* best prices and the best options all around. I left for staples at around 1pm.

I live RIGHT next to the Subway station, so it’s really not an issue to go anywhere. I thought that I had seen a Staples store four stops towards Queens about a week ago, so that’s the train I got on. Once I got to the right station, I could not, for the life of me, see the Staples. Oh- I should mention that at the time it was P.O.U.R.I.N.G. rain. I have a waterproof jacket but in no way was I wearing the correct pants and shoes. And I also did not bring my umbrella. So I googled the store and I had to walk about a mile to get there. No biggie. This is what happens in NY right? You walk everywhere.

It wasn’t a bad walk, it was just wet. I didn’t mind the water, but rain makes it very hard to text while walking. So I had to enjoy my surroundings…

When I finally got to the store, I was drenched. Whatever. I got my prints and got out! As I was leaving the store I noticed I was starving, so I stopped at Dunkin Donuts and bought two chocolate donuts with sprinkles (I had to even out all this walking with calories). Then I stopped and bought something I never thought I would own. A Grandma cart, pictured here.

I will never get over how convenient this will be.

Anyway, once I finally got home, after all that walking, I decided to start addressing all of these envelopes. I think I spent another two hours doing that! They are all ready to go out now though.

That was all just the beginning of my day.

As the evening was beginning, Ande and I were trying to figure out what our plans were going to be. We had a bunch of ideas, but the number one thing we wanted to do was see a comedy show. We were thinking an open mic night, but we ended up finding a free* show at UCB, or Upright Citizen’s Brigade in Chelsea. We were really excited. So we got on the train, and started our adventure.

We were also STARVING. When we arrived in Chelsea, we stopped at Chipotle. You would have thought we had never had a burrito in our whole lives! We ate those things in two seconds. We were so hungry. Side note: My burrito and drink were $11.75. That was absurd, just saying.

We left Chipotle, and we headed toward UCB for the show, and we found a long line outside the door. OH- and we passed the Rachel Ray show! We got in the back of the line, and soon after, a woman (who told us she had just started menopause, trying to be hilarious) got in line behind us. Her name was Amy. She actually takes classes at UCB, which is something I always thought would be cool. She was telling us all about how the classes work. There are four levels, and each level is eight weeks, and about 500 dollars. I’ll wait until I’m employed, but it might be a fun thing to do!

We didn’t get into the show. We were too far back in the line, and they reached capacity. So sad. But the woman said they have shows literally every day so we were not really bummed.

After that, we decided we better just go to a cool bar. We yelped it, but we weren’t finding anything we loved. We finally just googled “Best dive bars in New York City,” and we found the* best dive bar we have ever encountered! They had darts, a jukebox, a pool table, and a cool vibe. Something I can’t live without. We ended up spending maybe two hours at the bar. I can’t remember the name actually, but it was cool. We played darts! I have never actually played darts in a bar. We were trying to hit the bullseye for like 30 minutes, but we couldn’t even.

After darts, we went and sat at the bar again, and started talking to the bartender. Always a good move. His name was Mark. We told him that we just moved from CA, and he gave us each a free shot. Beautiful. Good job, Mark.

After that we pretty much went home. But understand that “going home” took at least a mile of walking and three different trains. Because we didn’t know where we were. Now that I am home, I am just excited. I love this apartment, I love this new life.

Here are some pictures of my apartment!
