United World College in Mostar

UWC students in front of Mostar’s Stari Most

In the picturesque town of Mostar lies a unique program, increasing religious tolerance and understanding on a global scale. The United World College in Mostar is an international boarding school and part of the UWC movement, with a mission to “make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.” UWC in Mostar joins 16 other schools around the world as a part of UWC, and was founded in 2006. The two-year school brings 200 students from nearly 60 country together to learn in Mostar. Not only that, but it is the only school in the country where Bosniak, Croat and Serb students live and go to school together. Essentially, it is the polar opposite of “2 schools under one roof” school. In fact, UWC Mostar is the only UWC school worldwide to have the explicit aim “to contribute to the reconstruction of a post-conflict society”.

UWC Mostar is located within Gimnazija Mostar

UWC Mostar has impacts on it’s local community as well. Students work in Mostar to complete projects, working to increase the level of tolerance within the city overall. By educating high school students from around Bosnia and around the world, the UWC experience creates students that are able to work cross-culturally. Without a doubt, UWC Mostar is having a positive impact on the City of Mostar, slowly helping to raise the overall level of understanding around the city and the region.
