Design Team Outing: Cedrics @ The Shed

For our September team outing, we took a short subway ride to Chelsea to explore Danny Meyer’s non-tipping bar located in the lower level lobby of New York’s art center: The Shed. Cedric’s was named after the architect who inspired the design for The Shed, Cedric Price. While the facade of the center is industrial, the interior of the cocktail bar is warm and inviting. Its spacious layout is reminiscent of a living room, I thought to myself, as I dined on a sofa and oversized coffee table across from the rest of the design team.

While we were perusing the menu my eyes gravitated towards “Sammy’s Sunshine Slammer”, a vodka-based cocktail mixed with spiced orange liqueur and soda. This drink was a perfect farewell to summer. To go with our adult beverages we all split a handful of different appetizers. We enjoyed the curry deviled eggs, beef kielbasa in a blanket, blue crab dip, and a roasted turkey sandwich. While every meal was unique and tasty in its own right, I was impartial to the beef in a blanket. To top off our outing we ordered the pull-apart monkey bread for two (split seven ways) and we all agreed it was the highlight of the evening. If you find yourself at the Hudson Yards definitely stop in for a drink and a quick bite.

Last month the BentoBox design team was given the opportunity to pick and plan our team outing activity. We narrowed down from a myriad of potential options ranging from karaoke and Korean barbecue, to happy hour drinks. Ultimately we decided to try Cedric’s, a recently opened bar at The Shed, the new arts center at Hudson Yards.

Getting to Hudson Yards from our office was a bit of an adventure. On our way, we encountered several New York City landmarks, including the longest (and scariest) escalator in the city, The High Line, the Vessel, and our destination, The Shed.

Side note: If the escalator at the Hudson Yards station doesn’t sound appealing to you, you can skip that and take the inclined elevators — the first ever in the city’s subway system. The elevators were constructed to comply with the Americans with Disability Act of 1990. Yes, our team’s ADA advocacy transcends the workplace.

Located in the lobby of The Shed, Cedric’s is pretty hard to miss, partly due to the fun mid-century modern decor, and partly because of the upbeat playlist they had going. One thing I didn’t expect to write about is the chairs. Based on my several years of chair-sitting experience, there’s a negative correlation between how heavily “designed” a chair is, and how comfortable that chair will be. This wasn’t the case for the chairs at Cedric’s. They were great. Okay, done talking about the chairs and onto what we all came for, the food.

Among the group’s favorites were the Beef in a Blanket and the Pull-Apart Monkey Bread. The monkey bread was soft and topped with a cinnamon-sugar glaze, pecans, and tiny toothpick flags of various countries. This was my first time trying monkey bread and I have a feeling that all other monkey bread I have in the future will pale in comparison. My drink was called the Mixed Media Highball, an appropriate name, as it was a pleasant mix of slightly sweet and slightly spicy. Although Cedric’s proclaims itself to focus more on drinks than food, the food options are not at all lacking. Admittedly, at first glance, the plates looked to be on the smaller side, but we all left feeling extremely full and satisfied with our choice of team outing activity. Highly recommend not only for company mandated fun, but also for a night out, or for visiting after a day of touring around Hudson Yards.
