Welcome to the second StEP Startup Highlight!

This week we’ll be highlighting CarpeMed, a platform designed to bring access and quality to healthcare patients.

Category: Healthcare

Olaseni was born and raised in Nigeria and moved to the US at a young age. After graduating from law school, he joined the army as a military lawyer stationed in different locations, including Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, Texas, and Georgia throughout his time in service. Now, he is pursuing his MBA at Berkeley Haas while still holding a New York attorney license, and starting his new business

CarpeMed is an app created by Olaseni Bello to address problems and improvements in the healthcare field. It was created in Bali, July of this year. The app is a platform that provides access to top-quality healthcare anywhere in the world, with several features embedded within the system. Olaseni created the app for several reasons; one being that he lost his grandmother to a doctor, which led him to focus on the disparity in healthcare — something he’s never thought much about before.

Carrying key components of your health records with you is one of the main features of the CarpeMed app. In the app, users can sync all their health records, including one of the most important pieces of information; blood type. This importance was stressed by Olaseni as proper healthcare can only be accessed if an individual’s blood type is known. It was crucial to Olaseni that this information be one of the basic features the app offered as in the military, every individual had to wear dog tags with their blood type in case of any medical emergencies.

Another key feature of the app is the Safety Travel Companion. If you’re traveling with a group of people, you may grant people in your group temporary access to your health records from the app. This is useful if you are in need of immediate help but are not able to communicate your needs and information. However, your information is only accessible if you pre-approve your group before your trip. This feature is one of the many that are offered in the CarpeMed app, and one that Olaseni is especially proud of. CarpeMed also allows you to tailor your trip in proximity to the best facilities if you have or want to prepare for healthcare needs. Another special feature is the 3D human body that allows you to pinpoint where you are experiencing pain. This will bridge communication between patient and doctor, and provide a more visual and accurate description of the area that needs to be treated. Olaseni has a pending provisional patent application and has a HIPAA compliant platform.

Olaseni elaborated on his progress in the StEP program and says that the StEP process has helped him “move the needle faster” in developing his app, and has prevented him from falling into the quicksand of academics. After joining StEP and CalHacks, the CarpeMed team now consists of four team members: 2 MBAs, a tech-expert from Irvine, California, and an undergraduate student from UC Berkeley.

Although Olaseni has already applied to an accelerator, he has plans to send applications to BigIdeas and Launch. He would like to meet with Airbnb to see where CarpeMed could find a partnership with the traveling company. Currently, Olaseni plans to target large enterprises in order to establish some partnerships. Subscriptions are the main financial model for the company. When going overseas, customers would purchase insurance along with CarpeMed. CarpeMed also plans to expand further into health and lifestyle, possibly including holistic and alternative medicine in the coming months.

Olaseni notes that CarpeMed is driven and powered by military resilience. Specifically, he leverages lessons from military missions and training that emphasize resourcefulness, adaptability, drive, and teamwork.
