Two weeks ago, we got the chance to hear from Mia Shanholtzer, a UC Berkeley bioengineering alumnus, on her exciting career as a design engineer. Many bioengineers are familiar with Medtronic, the world’s largest medical device development company. In fact, two people every second are treated with one of Medtronic’s medical technologies or therapies. Mia was first recruited to Medtronic as a microbiology intern and told us that starting out at a large company allowed her to learn from many different departments, due to the abundance of resources there. During her time at Medtronic, she also worked as a test method development engineer and as an R&D engineer.

Her move to Speck Design in 2014 gave her the opportunity to work on non-medical devices in her role as a senior mechanical engineer. She enjoys being involved in the development of a wide range of innovative technologies, as well as the appreciably shorter time-to-market of non-medical devices. A couple of Speck Design’s recent products are Suitable Technologies’ mobile telecommunication device (a device that acts as a physical “body” for off site employees engage with their colleagues) and the IntelliSense Bone Drill shown below. We would like to thank Mia for her valuable advice and sharing her experience with us!
