Deacquisitioning furniture from residents’ rooms
Moving out of the Silverado residence is sometimes a rushed process, compounded by loss.
Family council members have shared local resources that could be helpful for you in managing this. Here are a few, please add comments to suggest others. We’ll periodically re-edit this article to update it with new resources. This first set were suggested by Ann Nomy. (Thank you, Ann!)
- Uhuru Furniture: Pick up tax-deductible donations supporting African People’s Education and Defense Fund. (For fastest service call … 510–763–3342) Email photos of your furniture to uhurufurniture@yahoo.com to expedite the screening process. We will move donations from where they stand, no need to move items outside!
- Poor Honey’s: Buys furniture locally here in the Bay Area: Take photos of your current furniture and email them to poorhoneys@yahoo.com. After evaluating we’ll let you know if the pieces are a fit for our warehouse, come and pick them up, and cut you a check for a fair price — on the spot.
- Urban Ore: Won’t buy things, but will accept a wide range of household goods. See their website for details.
- ReCARES collects, redistributes, and encourages reuse throughout its 3 Bay Area locations. Our volunteers receive and redistribute donations of clean, gently used medical equipment and unused home health care supplies each week. These are provided free of charge to those in need who visit our sites.
According to Carol Rothman, generally no used store accepts beds because of bedbug risks. In a pinch, you might need to post in Craigslist as free.
