TLDR: Party in Berlin is about having fun and not about being fancy — in true Berlin clubs there are no VIP tables. How to get in: 1. Casual dress code, wearing black usually works well, 2. Check what music is playing in the club you are headed, 3. Big groups don’t work, 4. Guy girl ratio is important, 5. If possible buy tickets online, 6. German can help, 7. Be nice to bouncers and don’t try to bribe them, doesn’t work, 8. Have plan B, 9. Don’t take photos in the clubs. Check party app Meexer: goo.gl/ArYd01

Have you recently moved to Berlin or are just visiting for a few days? Are you searching for a true Berlin experience? Have you heard it’s hard to get into the good clubs?

Relax, we are here to help you.

If you are looking for posh clubs, VIP tables, boats of vodka, red bull and champagne you are probably not in the right city. Go to New York, Barcelona, London, etc. Of course, there are also these types of clubs in Berlin, but that’s not what this city is famous for.

BERLIN PARTY EXPERIENCE

Now we will focus on true Berlin experience. First of all, you have to understand what true Berlin clubs look like and what they are all about.

Our top 10:

There are of course many more; these are just a few of our favourite ones. You can always check for more party ideas here.

Tresor

True Berlin clubs are about having fun, being relaxed, open-minded, and this is the reason you won’t find VIP tables in there. Usually, you also won’t find people dressed up in shirts and blazers. Oh, no-no, this is not the place to show off, and this is not the place to sit at the table and watch around and try to be “the cool one”.

Berlin is a place open to all kind of people and making them equal is what makes this place special and this is what all this clubs try to represent. They want you to enjoy, do whatever your heart feels like, dance and get lost in time and space. :)

MUSIC

Berlin is the capital of Techno, Minimal, Deephouse and Electro music. There is probably no other city that has so many techno and electro clubs as Berlin. Many tourists come to Berlin for the weekend to party from Friday evening to Monday morning. Yeah, most of the clubs mentioned above are opened nonstop all weekend!

Again, don’t expect fancy places. Most of the parties started in unused cellars and industrial building, and this is still the case for some of the clubs. However, the atmosphere in these clubs is great and don’t be surprised if you will feel like Alice in Wonderland.

PRACTICAL TIPS: HOW TO GET IN?

Berghain

1. Dress code

DO NOT dress up posh! Shirts, Blazers, posh brands and elegant shoes won’t get you in, opposite they may help you to stay out. You may find this odd to get used to as in the majority of all other cities it is exactly the opposite, you have to style up to get into the cool clubs.

So what to wear?

Guys: Plain black or grey shirt with big O-neck or v-neck is universal and almost always works with some dark trousers/jeans and some, not shiny shoes.

Girls: It’s a bit harder to explain what to wear for girls. Don’t style up too much and don’t exaggerate with shiny high heels. Dark trousers and darker colors in general usually work very well.

But this doesn’t mean that you have to dress black and grey! When going out, observe people around you, and you will get a better idea what works and what doesn’t.

2. Know the music they are playing

When you choose your club, check out what music they are playing, what is the name and theme of the party, who are the DJs and check out few of their songs. It’s not unusual that the bouncer will ask you what’s this party about or if you know who is playing. This info will also help you to choose the club where music meets your wishes.

3. Big groups

Big groups are almost never welcome unless there are a lot more girls than guys, but don’t rely on that. Split up into smaller groups before you queue up for a club and always try to have at least one girl in the group. (2–3)

4. Guy to Girl ratio and what to do about it

It’s almost always easier to get into the club if there are some girls in the group. Girls alone usually don’t have problems getting into clubs, but guys might have some difficulties. In case you go out guys only, try find some girls when you are waiting in the queue. Kindly ask them if they can help you to get into the club (pretending that you are together as a group). If they help you to get in, buy them a drink as a thank you :).

5. Tickets

If you are in a big group you can check if you can buy tickets for the specific club online, usually they are cheaper than the normal entrance fee (10–15 €). However, some of the clubs above don’t offer tickets, reservations or guest lists.

6. German

For some clubs, it helps if you speak German with the bouncers. If your German language skills = zero, you can again try to use some help from people in the queue ;).

7. Bouncers

Famous Berghain bouncer: Sven

As always in life, being nice to other people can only help you, same goes for bouncers. Be friendly, say hi when it’s your turn and keep in mind that bouncers are seeing hundreds of drunk people each night. Don’t try to bribe them and don’t argue with them, it will never work out well. There is no universal magic rule to get in - at the end bouncer is the judge, and if he decides that he won’t let you in, there is not much you can do. You can come later and try again (works sometimes) or instead go to plan B. Cheer up!

8. Plan B

Before you go out it might be worth to search for alternative clubs close by your target. Berlin is a quite large city and going from one side to the other can take a lot of time, thus search for 1 or 2 alternatives close by before you go to your desired club.

9. Taking photos

Some clubs are very sensitive to taking photos in the club, and they will even give you a sticker to your mobile phone camera. If you don’t want to be kicked out, respect their rules and simply enjoy the club without photos and selfies.
