“Smart” has a lot of meanings these days, especially in the tech world. While Best Buy’s Smart Lists API does involve plenty of smart devices, we’re talking “smart” in the classic sense. These lists are about smarter shopping, allowing users to aggregate products within our subcategories and sort the results by best-selling and top-rated products within those categories.

While we’ve always compiled product lists for special occasions on BestBuy.com, the general online shopping experience is largely category-oriented. That’s fine if you know you’re looking to browse, say, Bluetooth speakers or fitness trackers, but it’s less helpful if you’re looking for a variety of products suited to a certain activity or event — a housewarming, birthday or vacation, for example.

With Smart Lists, we do the work for you. Users can run one query and return multiple products rather than hunting and making individual queries for each one. Our Connected Home endpoint, for instance, sorts home automation items such as thermostats, smoke detectors and smart light bulbs. Our Active Adventurer endpoint focuses on items for fitness and outdoor activities, such as activity trackers, action camcorders and sport watches.

By grouping products outside of their traditional categories, we aim to make it that much easier for our API users to tailor their experiences to their needs. More endpoints are on the way soon, so keep your eyes on our Smart Lists.
