Meet Hartley’s Legacy: a group of student musicians with a talent for giving back

Hartley’s Legacy is an impressive group of middle school and high school students from New Jersey who perform music in the spirit of making an impact.

A student-run volunteer collective, Hartley’s Legacy plays a wide variety of music styles including classical, jazz and gospel. Their music features instruments such as piano, saxophone, electric cello and marimba.

After members of the group read the #PoPBook, The Promise of a Pencil, they became inspired to fundraise for PoP, and we’re so grateful they did! Together, they decided to use their musical talent to support PoP’s mission of providing children around the world with access to quality education. They organized a benefit concert and sold tickets to their entire community of friends, families and teachers. But their efforts didn’t stop there! They also posted flyers around their schools, the public library and local restaurants, and even reached out to newspapers for coverage.

Current president of Hartley’s Legacy, Daniel Kim, tells us that the concert was a success, not only because of the donations they received during the evening, but also because of the awareness they were able to raise about PoP. To Daniel, one of the best parts was, “being able to make an impact on the lives of students in need and directly affect the quality of their education.”

In addition to holding benefit concerts, the members of Hartley’s Legacy volunteer at an assisted living home twice monthly. There, they perform music, serve snacks and socialize with the senior residents. Honoring the namesake of the group, the members of Hartley’s Legacy strive to promote acts of kindness, big and small — and we think they’re doing an awesome job at it!
