4.0 out of 5 stars RDH Discusses Pros & Cons

After spending hours diligently researching the entire US electric toothbrush market, I chose this sonic Philips 6100 model. I would have also tried an ultrasonic toothbrush but found that most were “currently unavailable” and/or offered by small companies with service issues. Sonic and ultrasonic are different but are often confused in review articles, even in some written by “experts”. All of the current model Philips sonic toothbrushes operate with 31,000 brush strokes per minute, so they will all remove plaque and do an excellent job of cleaning. The sonic technology creates perceptible micro bubbles that circulate between teeth and below the gumline which assist in making my mouth feel extra clean. Various features are important to different users and influence pricing structure.

Having been a hard brusher for much of my early life, the pressure sensor was theoretically one of the most important reasons that I chose this toothbrush. In my opinion, one has to press unreasonably hard while brushing to elicit the pressure sensor’s vibration change. So in its current version, I do not think this feature is realistically very helpful.

The whitening feature is real, but people should realize that it is not intended to be a whitening treatment to change the actual shade of the teeth. It can help minimize / remove extrinsic stains from coffee, wine, etc if used appropriately.

For me, an important positive not usually mentioned is that this toothbrush will lie stably on its side on a flat surface vs rolling around. So if you want to lay it on a countertop and apply toothpaste, it will stay in position and not roll over, spilling toothpaste.

The finish is rather slick, and it can be hard to keep a grip at times. The addition of a rubberized grip strip could be an improvement. I wrapped a rubber band around the handle which is tempering the problem.

Overall, this is an excellent toothbrush with quad pacer timer, 3 intensity levels, Smart Brush technology and a brush change reminder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Results that you can See and Feel

Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2018

Style Name: Handle Only Color: White Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )

My wife already uses a Sonicare Series 2 PlaqueControl and one thing we can say for sure that these toothbrushes are miles better than any manual or cheaper battery operated toothbrushes can be . Seriously my wife was skeptical and mentioned that how much better can it really be compared to her Oral-B battery operated toothbrush when she started using the Sonicare — And now its is impossible for us to go back

USING THE SONICARE TOOTHBRUSHES
- Brushing your teeth couldn’t be easier or more thorough. All you have to do is move the toothbrush slowly sideways until the quadpacer timer (which comes on most models) reminds you to switch to a different row of teeth
- Results are actually visible — when paired with a good withenting toothpaste , you will not only feel but also notice that your teeth are whiter and shiner
- It only takes day or two to get accustomed to the high intensity vibrations of the toothbrush as you have avoid the back of the brush head hitting the teeth opposite to the ones you are brushing (it can be quite jarring )
- All Sonicare brush heads are intercompatible with each other (except the E-series) You can use diamond clean, Plaque control , ProResults , Simply Clean brush heads depending upon your requirements or budget . There are generic off-brand replacement options available as well

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SONICARE TOOTHBRUSH
There is a lot of options within the Sonicare lineup of toothbrushes with increasing number of features and cost and choosing the right one can be a bit confusing. I will do my best to simplify it . But one thing you want to know of sure that ALL sonicare toothbrushes are capable of their main advertised “ Upto 31,000 Brush strokes per minute” , so in reality all Brush handles have the same ‘Cleaning Power’ and the only difference in different models is the bundled brush heads (which you can replace anyway) , speed settings , Mode settings, Pressure Sensors, travel cases and even bluetooth app connectivity ! Here is my take on a few different models , including the new 6 Series :

Series 2 — HX6211
- One of the most economical Sonicare toothbrushes and their ‘entry-level’ option
- Yet it delivers the same ‘31,000 brush strokes’ cleaning power as the most expensive Sonicare model out there
- Comes with their Plaque Control brush head (HX9023) , which is also one of their most economical options . You can always swap it with another brush head like the DiamondClean
- Has a NiMh rechargeable battery instead of Li-Ion to reduce costs , as a result its handle is thicker
- Some store exclusive models also have the quadpacer timer
- Single speed, but has a beginner mode which gently ramps up speed over the first 15 brushings
- $49 on Amazon

HealthyWhite+ HX8911
- Has 3 speed, 2 Mode settings
- Has a Li-Ion battery and hence a slimmer handle
- Comes with a plastic travel case
- Comes with the DiamondClean brush head (HX6063/64) which is one of their best available brusheads in terms of whitening performance
- Currently on sale at $49 on Amazon (as of 20th Feb) , which makes it an exceptional value for money

Series 6 — ProteciveClean (This listing)
- Has 3 speed settings
- Adds a pressure sensor as well which gently warns you by pulsing its speed creating a rhythmic sound if you press the toothbrush too hard . This is not only good for your gums but also helps in making the brush heads (which are expensive) last longer
- Also has a brush head replacement reminder indicator
- 3 Modes with which get selected automatically if you use the newer smart brush heads (which have a WiFi like symbol) . This smart select is somewhat gimmicky as you can always select the modes manually. Also the smart chip enabled brush heads are more expensive than the regular non-chip models
- Comes with the new Diamond clean (HX6063/65) chip enabled brush head. Which is really the same brush head as the regular DiamondClean head HX6063/64 with an additional embedded chip
- Quadpacer, Li-Ion battery , Travel Case
- You can also consider other models in the ProtectiveClean series if you like the pressure sensor, Models such as the 5100 or 4100 drop some features like speed control, mode control in favour of a lower cost

FINAL THOUGHTS
According to me the main feature for the Sonicare ProtectiveClean Series is its pressure sensor which not only makes it gentle on sensitive gums , but also makes its brush heads last longer . It strikes a good balance between usable features and cost without superfluous features like a mobile app etc . So if you like a Pressure Sensor equipped Sonicare (which I highly recommend) you cant go wrong with the ProtectiveClean Series (6100, 5100, 4100)

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead, will no longer charge. Quality of Sonicare has decreased Significantly

Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2018

Style Name: Handle Only Color: Pink Verified Purchase

Update to my review: Now this toothbrush will not charge. Not only did it provide less power than any previous sonicare I owned, it had a shorter overall life before being dead.
Original review:
This toothbrush has much less power then my previous Sonicare. I have owned several of these over the years. This one is by far the worst. Even at its highest setting, I can not get the power I got from my previous Sonicare brushes. If I push harder against my teeth, it just stops vibrating. The gap between the end of the toothbrush and the handle is larger then it should be, but it does not push down any further. After being a Sonicare user for many years, I am switching to Oral B.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this toothbrush!

I did some investigating to find the best electric toothbrush and I am so glad I chose this one. Even though I had an older Sonicare that was fine, this one is so much better. I could tell it was doing a better job right away and when I went for my last cleaning the hygienist said that my teeth looked remarkably clean. It also seems quieter than my last one and takes less room on the counter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent electric toothbrush for first-time users!

Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2018

First time user for electric toothbrush. Glad I spent extra for the toothbrush that has the different intensities because I needed to start on the lowest one first to get comfortable with it. I really like the change in tone that alerts you when to move to the next quadrant while brushing. Love the color and the case that comes with it. There are air holes on one side of the case so I just flip that side up to keep it ventilated while not using. Have been using it for a couple weeks without having to charge it yet. I also like that it has different modes that you can use. Really happy with my purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much better than BURST!

Reviewed in Canada on November 10, 2020

Used to have a sonicare years ago and after it died (around 5 years of use) I decided to try another brand (BURST) I tried to like the BURST but it just didn’t even compare to the sonicare. Not even close. I used the BURST for about 2 years and finally had enough and went back to sonciare. Got the 6100 on sale so it was too good to pass up. The sonicare feels better, cleans better and just all around better quality than the competitors. Its expensive but its really investing in your overall dental health. Teeth feel so clean. Not a big fan of the “whitening” brush head though. Set up an auto subscription of the sonicare plaque control brush heads. Hoping I get another 5+ years out of this one too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, sleek, but a waste of money

Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2021

Works great. But I feel it works just like any other auto tooth brush. I got it for my husband and he’s been using it for about a month now, and there really isn’t a different between this tooth brush and his manual. His teeth aren’t any whiter, we did picture comparisons to see if there was. There’s not. Not even one shade difference. I suggest if you want an electric toothbrush, to just get a cheaper one. Doesn’t have to be the cheapest but don’t bother wasting money on all these “higher grade” tooth brushes. The newest oral b one is the same btw. He got that one for me. It doesn’t make any difference. 😑

Love the toothbrush, but only recieved 1 toothbrush head instead of 2 that its supposed to come with. Amazon was not able to send me a replacement head. I was really disappointed, because the Sonicare brush heads are not cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best 100$ I have spent in a while!

Reviewed in Canada on February 1, 2021

I have never had an electric toothbrush until now and I would never go back. This toothbrush is simple to use with three different settings: Clean, White and Gums, each setting having a different time. It’s very sleek and easy to clean. The battery life is great too, lasting me around 2 weeks, give or take on how many times a day I brush my teeth and what settings I use. My teeth feel very clean afterwards and the sound isn’t too loud. I have very sensitive ears so this was a concern for me. Lastly, the case it comes with is great to travel with and the charger is very sleek as well, and doesn’t take up much room on the counter. I would recommend this toothbrush to anyone!

Fits nice in the hand. Comes with two heads and the case that charges with a cord for USB plus the wall charger with a magnet to use out of the case. Seems good quality so far. From full charge I’ve used it 2–3 times daily for several days and haven’t had to charge it yet. Fully adjustable speeds, easy to use. My teeth feel great now! The purple is darker than expected but it’s still a nice colour
