Your Three Career Gaps

The gap between where you are and where you want to be may sometimes feel like an uncrossable chasm. And even more so when you don’t know where you want to be.

These gaps become much easier to manage when we classify why they exist.

In live workshops, I host an activity called Anchors to Rockets where participants share the challenges and obstacles holding them back.

Despite collecting hundreds of anchors, they all fall into just three categories:

1. Awareness

We have a very limited field of vision when it comes to possible career paths. Additionally, we often lack self-awareness. As evidenced by my most popular workshop topic; how to change your career when you don’t know what you want.

2. Skills

Creating value is the currency you trade on in your career. The skills you acquire and strengthen help you close gaps in value creation.

3. Strategy

When less than half of available jobs are listed publicly, you need new strategies to find and authentically connect with the people you want to work with.

But what about financial challenges?

For most of us, time and money are anchors feeding limiting beliefs about what is possible.

Time and money anchors fall into the Strategy Gap where we can use tactics to shift our mindset and find ways around these challenges.

For example, crowdfunding your epic Nation Parks trip. Or when a simple reframing turns an anchor into an opportunity.

You are not alone.

These three career gaps represent hundreds of conversations I’ve had with people who felt stuck until they could see their challenges more clearly.

Knowing you are not alone, you can seek out lessons from those who have previously crossed the gaps you stand at.
