Bethel University Graduate Marcus Eckert’s abilities may be the same as other CrossFit competitors, but his apparel on this particular day is a little different from the rest. Eckert’s bow tie stands out against the typical gym shorts and sweaty t-shirts that the other competitors were wearing. CrossFit is known as a serious competition but Eckert enjoys lightening the mood.

Club and CrossFit coach Jake Derksen describes CrossFit as “a high intensity circuit training that uses functional movements.” The general public has become much more aware of the sport over the past couple of years when ESPN began broadcasting the CrossFit Games. Besides participating in the Games, Eckert also trains others at Allegiance Fitness, the gym Eckert calls home.

“He’s extremely outgoing and always has a smile on his face,” Fellow Allegiance trainer Chadwick Haider said. “Whenever there is a new member he will go introduce himself to get to know them personally.”

With his personality, it is no shock to members when they find out that his full time job is at a church. After obtaining an internship with Eagle Brook Church during his time at Bethel, Eckert was able to turn that internship into a temporary position and then finally into an official job. He went from being a student at Bethel to Ministry Expansion Coordinator of a mega church within a course of a year.

“We’ve all been given abilities. I have a passion that allows me to form connections and develop deeper relationships that allow me to share my faith.” — Marcus Eckert, Bethel Graduate

While being a participant and trainer of CrossFit, and working for a church may not sound like they connect, for Eckert they do. Eckert views his time with CrossFit as a way to build relationships with others and have opportunities to show them God’s love.

Eckert shares his experience with others.

“We’ve all been given abilities,” Eckert said. “I have a passion that allows me to form connections and develop deeper relationships that allow me to share my faith.”

Just the other week Eckert was able to use his status in CrossFit to talk to someone about God. When a member of the gym was talking to Eckert, the member began asking about what he did for a full time job. When he heard that Eckert worked at a church he began opening up about his life, next thing you know he agreed to attend Eagle Brook with Eckert.

To Eckert there is nothing more rewarding than when his two jobs intersect. It is something that he never expected, but has welcomed with open arms.

“It’s pretty cool,” Eckert said. “Two worlds unintentionally connect.”
