A by-the-book romantic comedy, The Proposal reinvigorates the genre’s tired plotline with a steady stream of witty banter and eyebrow-raising family drama. When stony, seemingly heartless book editor Margaret Tate (Bullock) discovers her visa is about to expire, she coerces her lovable assistant Andrew Paxton (Reynolds) into accepting the ultimate proposal: a shotgun wedding in exchange for his long-awaited promotion. As the unlikely pair attempt to sell their fraudulent relationship to Andrew’s family and a skeptical immigration officer, Margaret will do anything to avoid deportation – even if that means putting up with a pushy exotic male dancer and chanting “Get Low” with Andrew’s quirky grandmother in the Alaskan wilderness. If you’re looking for a feel-good Friday night movie suitable for any crowd, The Proposal’s familiar cast of characters won’t leave you disappointed.
