Bethel University Junior Grant Martinson has a very particular way of studying during finals week. He has to be facing the east side of the library in order to focus on his studies.

“I always have to face the books,” Martinson said.

“I listen to the instrumental music. If it has lyrics I get distracted and sing along,” Jody Olejar said.

The Bethel Library is busy place during finals week. With students frantically booking the study rooms, the leftover students must resort to quite areas throughout the library. The library is working with students by extending the open hours to 2 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday night.

When it comes to finals week, Bethel students get creative with how they are able to manage the stress of all the studying. They search for subtle ways that they can calm their stress of finals.

“I never drink pop,” Chase said. “But during finals week I always have to have a Mountain Dew during Late Night.”

For Jody Olejar it is the strawberry banana smoothie and a Spotify playlist of instrumental music that gets her through the long week of studying. Luke Chase has a different strategy. He treats himself to a Mountain Dew at the Late Night DC.

“I never drink pop,” Chase said. “But during finals week I always have to have a Mountain Dew during Late Night.”

“I take advantage of the free food and free drinks” Luke Chase said.

Ian Engstrom’s favorite place to study is at the 3900 Grill. For him, being surrounded by people and the soft lighting of the Grill is the perfect studying environment.

“I like the soft lighting in the grill!” Ian Engstrom said.

The 3900 Grill is one of the many popular spots that are utilized during finals week at Bethel University. While food is not served until 11 a.m., students file their way into the seating area as early as 7a.m. to claim their study spot for the day.

Bethel acknowledges how stressful finals week can be for their students. With the library, Grill and Dining Center all extending their hours specifically for finals week, students have a chance to get creative with their studying rituals.
