The second FIFA World Cup match for both of the teams from Russia and Egypt took place in Saint-Petersburg on Tuesday. A victory would grant the championship hosts a place in the knockout stage, and the last time that happened was 32 years ago! The guest team was in a dire need of scoring points after the defeat by Uruguay in their first match. Both of the teams are motivated enough to amuse the fans with an offence-oriented game.

Despite the dynamic start, none of the teams were able to pose a threat to the goal.

On 27 minutes, after several bounce-offs, Dzyuba had two promising episodes with the opposing team’s goalkeeper, but was out of luck. All the throw-ins performed by the “Zenit’s” forward were making a lot of sense and opening up real scoring opportunities.

Guarding from Mohsen, who was playing in the air exceptionally, was quite an ordeal, but Russia managed to do that as well as successfully block Salah in the first half. The last intense episode occurred on 42 minutes, when Salah received a ball at the penalty line and shot near the post. A timely refresher for the Russian team defence. The end of the half has been relatively calm.

47 minutes. Another cross to Dzyuba in the goal area. El Shanavi kicked the ball out of the penalty line, but Zobnin picked it up and shot. The shot ended up being unsuccessful, but it was in Dzyuba’s general direction. However, Fathi was first to get to the ball and scored an own goal to the corner.

1:0!

On 59 minutes the Russian team reinforced its edge further. Samedov let Fernandes through into the penalty zone. He successfully overtook defence and passed the ball to Cheryshev, who shot on goal from the 8 meter mark.

2:0!

At the start of the last third of the match the Cherchesov’s team has destroyed what’s left of the Egyptian team’s morale. The hosts earned a free kick on their side. Kutepov crossed to the penalty zone, where Dzyuba took over the ball in the air, overtook the defender and shot on the closest goal corner. A moment for all the Russian fans to finally relax. Miracles do happen, but not of such caliber. Egypt was left knocked out and unable to retaliate.

72 minutes. Salah was brought down by Zobnin and was awarded a penalty. Initially the referee thought it was a free kick, but the dispute arose and was resolved with the help of VAR. Salah performed a shot to the right, a direction which Akinfeev predicted, but he failed to reach the ball.

3:1.
