Being on the bench stinks. It’s never fun when you see your friends, classmates, and teammates excel on the field while you are stuck waving the towel on the sidelines. Yet as a bench player, you have to somehow find a way to contribute to your team. You should keep a few things in mind when you are a bench player or maybe just not starting where you want to be. It’s very easy to get in your own head and psyche yourself out, but if you want to reach your end goal it will take time and a conscious, purposeful effort. Take a look at some things to keep in mind to positively contribute as a bench player.

Have good body language.

There’s nothing worse to see as a coach than a player that is slouching, unexcited, or visibly disappointed when it comes to their playing time. Regardless of where you stand on a team, you should always be looking to better the people around you. So, have good body language and show your teammates that you care. When the players on the court or field look over, they want to see their teammates up and excited for them — thus giving confidence. Also, it is important to be all in for your team, and also show your coach that you are committed and willing to take the time necessary on the bench.

Bring the most energy.

Something that will help your team and make you stand out to your coaches/teammates is to bring as much energy as you can everyday to practice or competition. Be the first one to meet the players coming off the field. Show encouragement whenever you can. Be vocally and spiritually involved so that you will help your team, and you can create a supportive environment that breeds success.

Take note of your competition.

If you are on the bench, another way you can help is by observing your opponent and identifying what they are doing and how to best combat it. This way, you can help your teammates in competition and always have the knowledge to recall your opponents’ tendencies. It’s hard to be observant when playing and coaching. So, be an extra set of eyes and ears for your team.

Always be ready for your moment.

A team is at its best when there is depth. Whether a player goes down with and injury or a new line needs to take over for the starters, it’s crucial to have a deep group of talented players. If you find yourself on the bench, always be ready to take advantage of the time you’re given. You can learn from players such as Tom Brady to be ready for when your moment comes. Take that opportunity to show your coaches and team you don’t deserve to be on the bench. Always prepare with that moment in mind — so you can be ready to take advantage.
