In life, we often go through difficulties and bad phases, which naturally results in negative thoughts.

People who suffer from anxiety tend to do more negative thinking. “I’m not good enough,” “This is going to end badly,” “Everything sucks.” These kinds of thoughts have crossed everyone’s minds. However, negative thoughts usually attract more negativity to a person’s life, so you must learn to control them.

Here’s a list of tips that might help you overcome your negative thoughts and go back to enjoying life at its fullest:

1. People don’t care as much as you think they do.

One of the biggest things that can bring negative thoughts is worrying about what other people think about something you have done.

In reality, not that many people care. Everyone has their own lives and problems to tackle, which means no one has the time and energy to occupy themselves with you.

Have you ever stopped for a moment and thought others might be worrying about what YOU think of them?

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

— Dr. Seuss

2. Fall seven times, get up eight.

There isn’t one single person on this planet that doesn’t have flaws. Imperfections make us human. It would be best if you learn always to forgive yourself for your mistakes.

People are born with little to no wisdom -it’s completely natural to make mistakes and fail.

Sometimes learning is a series of trial and error. Therefore, it’s essential to have the strength to get up no matter how many times you have fallen: fall seven times, get up eight.

3. Scan the landscape for potential opportunities.

Looking at issues from different perspectives can help you find purpose in life and push away negativity.

Shortcomings, persistence, and curiosity have led us to the world’s most significant discoveries and inventions.

If you’re reading this, I assume you have shortcomings because you most likely have or had gone through situations that caused you with negative thoughts. So that leaves us with persistence and curiosity.

In my previous tip, I discussed the importance of continuing to get up no matter the circumstance, which allows me to talk about the last part of the equation: curiosity.

One of the best ways to build your curiosity is to use your circumstances and low moments as a muse.

The best example of this are comedians who use their depression and negative experiences to create the funniest comedy bits and specials. For these individuals, comedy has become their purpose that leads them to happiness.

4. Surround yourself with positive people.

This is an underrated yet crucial tip because we are affected by the people around us daily. Make sure you surround yourself with positive people that will help and teach you how to be positive.

Negative people who always complain, growl, and whimper will affect you. Hanging around with these individuals will result in a never-ending cycle of negativity. My advice is to stay away unless you are trying to help.

5. Do some reading.

There are plenty of books about positivity out there that will help change your mindset, and if you guys want, I might start writing more about the books that have changed my outlook on life.

Also, another recommendation I have is to read quotes. With a simple internet search, you’ll find many positive quotes from people who might’ve gone through similar issues.

All in all, negative thoughts are an everyday battle for most of us. However, they can be won. The important thing is to take matters into your own hands and realize that you have the strength to overcome them.

And always remember: you are much stronger than your thoughts.
