It was the end of 2018 and my wife and I were about 6 months away from having our first daughter. While I was absolutely overjoyed by this, there also was a point where there came this huge weight that I hadn’t been expecting.

After a conversation we had been having about our future, we decided that she would stay home with our daughter for several years after she was born. We decided this was the logical decision for us because the alternative was for her to go back to work, and then for us to have to give up almost all of her salary to a full-time babysitter or nanny, just so that that person could spend time with our child instead of one of us.

We had similar conversations to this one before, but we had never really decided the length of time she would stay home. But this time, we eventually came to the conclusion that if it made sense for her to stay home for several months or a year… then it also made sense for her to stay home for our daughter’s entire childhood, at least until she was in school full-time.

At this point, I finally connected the dots, and a new thought hit me like a ton of bricks.
