Better Experience #17: That Useless Tiny Hole on Your Phone 📌🕳📲

Who came up with this idea?

Better Experience Design is a collection of arbitrary encounters with everyday things that have given us either delightful or stressful experience.

1. What is it and what is the purpose?

On your phone, there is a hole that you need to poke in order to open the SIM tray. In which you need to poke it with an ejector (let’s just call it a “Pin”). We’re going to discuss both the hole and the pin.

2. Why/When did I use it?

Every time I need to switch my SIM card — or to be more specific, every time I need to open the SIM card tray. In most cases, when people go abroad they would buy a local sim card and that’s when they’ll change the SIM.

3. Was it a delightful or stressful experience? Why?

It’s not that bad but could be quite stressful. Let’s start with the Pin:

1. The “Pin” is practically useless

Other than helping you ejecting the SIM card tray, it has no other use.

2. There is a reason why people sell these pins in bulk.

The uselessness of this thing makes up for point number 2: you lose these pins quite easily. Check out eBay and they always sell these in bulks. Coincidence? Don’t think so.

Use cases for SIM card ejector, or the “Pin”.

3. The hole on our phones is too small

Too damn small there are no ‘everyday’ things that you can use to poke the hole. A pen? Nope, too big. How about toothpick? Nope, still not gonna work. Ok, how about a.. screwdriver? Nope, scr*w you.

I made this meme.

4. Can it be better?

Here’s how I would improve it.

Make a bigger hole

If the holes were bigger, we could easily poke it with a pen, toothpick, or any other pointy tool we have nearby. Remember the good old days when all you need to reset your Tamagotchi is a pen?

Press to eject the tray

A simple gesture that can be utilized as a replacement for the hole.

Make a cutout for our fingernail to pick

LG G2 had this easy to remove SIM card tray, you only need a fingernail. Insert your fingernail into the cutout then pull out the tray.

Virtual SIM Card

This is the future. Virtual SIM is a cloud-based phone number that you can access via an App. Imagine it as your Twitter or Instagram handle, but instead of an @, it is a phone number which you can use to call and text! Learn more about it here.

5. What do you think?

We think this might make a better experience of getting your SIM card tray out. What do you think?
