Better Experience Design is a collection of arbitrary encounters with everyday things that have given us either delightful or stressful experience.

1. What Is it and what is the purpose?

Public Transportation is one of the most used methods of daily commute that’s available for citizens to be used every day. Despite the availability and the services of public transport that were provided by the government, some citizens aren’t too eager to use these services in their daily Commute.

In this article, we’re going to discuss how we can provide a better experience that might encourage other citizens to use public transportation as part of their daily commute.

2. Why/When did I use it?

I use public transportation when I need to travel either to my workplace or a place that can be covered by public transportation.

3. Was it a delightful or stressful experience? Why?

It was a very delightful and almost practical way to travel to a lot of places in Jakarta for those who understand the stop and where to transit from one place to another.

But it can be a very stressful experience for people who don’t understand where to stop or transit from one place to another. The stressful experience is also triggered by the lack of visibility of the bus stop — since the bus stop sign does not look and feel like it is a bus stop.

4. Can it be better?

Yes, it can. By improving the looks and feel of the bus stop, we can actually encourage people to use public transportation. The solution is to make a design guideline for bus stops or an actual place for people to wait for the bus.

In Singapore for example, most bust stops have seats and shelter for people waiting for the bus.

Well in our case (Jakarta), there are just too many street signs that we tend to take for granted which makes us unaware of the presence of a bus stop sign.

We can enhance the design of the bus stop by displaying either the information of the route or the location of the stop in the bus stop sign. What is missing right now is the signifier that is obvious to people that this sign is a bus stop sign.

Hopefully, the design improvements can help encourage and gain the trust of the citizens to utilize public transportations even more.

5. What do you think?

We think this might make a better experience of using public transportation in Jakarta. What do you think?

Let us know in the comments if you have any idea about how to make it even better and let’s discuss 😆
