Flavoured gins are extremely popular at the moment, and people seem prepared to pay a premium price for them. However, did you know how easy they are to make at home?

This is a recipe for strawberry gin. It takes a few weeks to get the really best flavour — the longer you can bear to leave it, the better it gets.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle (70cl) gin — 40% ABV is best, but any will do. Make sure you know the strength if you want to calculate the strength of the final product
  • 580g (1 1/4 lb) fresh strawberries, halved or quartered (a little more or less is fine, but it will affect the strength of flavour)
  • 200g sugar
  • 1 handful fresh basil (optional)

Equipment:

  • a large, clean bottle with screw top — ideally 1.5 litres (3 pints) or more

Method:

Add everything except the basil to the container (chopping up the strawberries into smaller pieces if they won’t fit through the neck of the bottle). Screw the lid on tightly and turn upside down a few times to encourage mixing. The sugar will normally take a few days to dissolve completely.

Twice a day for the next few days (until all the sugar is dissolved) invert the bottle…
