Visuals are often thought of as a powerful tool for communicating with others. But what about using them to communicate with ourselves?

If you’ve ever printed out an infographic for your own benefit, or put up inspirational posters, you know what I’m talking about.

Visuals can be used to capture our attention, remind us of important information, and inspire us to take action.

Another way to look at this: consider the power of your environment. Is there an unresolved piece of mail, an object, or a mess somewhere in your house that bothers you a little bit each time you walk by? How much could that impact you over time? On the other hand, what could happen if you harnessed the power of your environment for good?

My Journey to Externalized Clarity

I used to keep important things like goals in my head. Terrible idea, but it took a lot of forgetting, falling behind, and outright failing to change strategy. My next step was slightly better, but only by a hair. I would write things down in my journal — anything from general aspirations to specific resolutions.
