As managers, we are busy people with a lot on our plates. We must ensure the success of our teams, meet deadlines, and make sure everyone is working towards the same goal. But work-life harmony is not just about balancing our professional responsibilities; it’s also about finding balance in our personal lives. Unfortunately, burnout is all too common for managers, especially nowadays when many of us are working from home.

In my experience as a manager and a wife, and based on my research on the topic, I believe that finding work-life balance can be a journey with its ups and downs.

To help you on your journey, here are some top Do’s and Don’ts that may help you achieve work-life balance (even for just one day! :)):

Professional Do’s:

  1. Prioritize Your Health and Well-Being: It’s important to make time for exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep. Taking care of yourself will help you be more productive and effective in your job.
  2. Set Boundaries: Don’t be afraid to say “no” to requests that interfere with your personal time. Communicate your boundaries to your team and make sure they know when you’re available.
  3. Delegate Tasks: You can’t do everything yourself. Delegate tasks to your team members and trust them to get the job done.
  4. Take Breaks: Take regular breaks throughout the day to recharge your batteries. This will help you stay focused and avoid burnout.
  5. Use Your Vacation Time: Taking all of your vacation time and using it to recharge and spend time with your loved ones is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Family Do’s:

  1. Make time for your family: Schedule regular family time into your calendar and prioritize it. This will help you maintain a healthy work-life balance and strengthen your relationships with loved ones.
  2. Communicate with your family: Let your family know about your work schedule and commitments so they can better understand your availability. This will help avoid conflicts and make it easier to plan family activities.
  3. Be present: When you’re spending time with your family, put away your phone and other distractions and be fully present. This will show your family that you value them and help you form deeper connections.
  4. Plan family vacations: Plan regular vacations with your family to create fun memories and de-stress. This will also give you a chance to disconnect from work and recharge.
  5. Be flexible: Understand that family life can be unpredictable, so be flexible and adapt when unexpected things come up.

Professional Don’ts:

  1. Don’t Bring Work Home With You: Leave work at the office and focus on your personal life when you’re at home. This will help you avoid burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  2. Don’t Micromanage: Trust your team members to get their work done without your constant supervision. Micromanaging can create unnecessary stress and burnout.
  3. Don’t Work Long Hours Consistently: While it’s okay to work long hours occasionally, consistently working long hours can lead to burnout and impact your personal life.
  4. Don’t Neglect Your Personal Life: Make time for your family and friends and pursue hobbies and interests outside of work. Neglecting your personal life can lead to burnout and negatively impact your mental health.
  5. Don’t Forget to Take Breaks: Taking regular breaks throughout the day is essential for maintaining focus and productivity. Don’t neglect this important aspect of work-life balance.

Family Don’ts:

  1. Don’t prioritize work over family: Remember that your family should always come first. Don’t sacrifice important family events or time for work.
  2. Don’t bring work home: Avoid working from home during family time, as this can lead to conflict and strain relationships with loved ones.
  3. Don’t overcommit: Avoid overcommitting to work or personal obligations, as this can lead to stress and burnout. Be realistic about what you can realistically handle.
  4. Don’t neglect your partner: Remember to also prioritize your relationship with your partner, as a healthy partnership can help you better navigate the challenges of work and family.
  5. Don’t forget to take care of yourself: Self-care is an important aspect of maintaining work-life balance, and can include activities like exercise, meditation, or hobbies that you enjoy. Taking care of yourself will also help you be a better manager and family member.

Remember, work-life balance is like a dance floor — you’ve got to find the right rhythm to make it work! Just like in dancing, you may stumble and take a few missteps, but that’s all part of the fun. So, don’t be afraid to shake things up, take breaks, and show off your moves in both your personal and professional life. Who knows, you might even impress your boss and partner with your newfound work-life harmony skills and inspire them to do the same.

Good luck and be more that welcome to share here your work-life balance hunting adventures :)
