Shah Rukh Khan: The Bollywood Star Marketers Need To Take Notes From

The humble actor blindsided Hollywood to the finish line

The Hollywood marketing machine has catapulted many movies and A-list movie stars to megastars and mega brands. Today, with the rise of social media, there is steep competition from South Korea, Hong Kong, and most of all Bombay — a.k.a Bollywood. Among all those competitors, one star has managed to shine brighter than the rest without the help of social media.

Enter Shah Rukh Khan, or King Khan as he is known to his legions of fans. Khan is the biggest film star in India. Today, he is no longer just King of Bollywood. He has managed to reign supreme and in 2015 Forbes magazine dubbed him “The Biggest Movie Star in the World”.

There are many reasons to admire Khan but I personally admire him for his branding and marketing marvels. Jay Z once aptly said:

“I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man.”

And Khan definitely felt the same way. What I find most intriguing about him is that he single-handedly manage to become the biggest film star in the world without even entering the Hollywood scene. Realistically, in terms of marketing and branding, what Khan was selling, outside…
