As a designer is obligated by the nature of their work to be up-to-date with the market and what resonates within the user, I thought I’d make a list of the upcoming trends within the UI/UX world, based on the findings of this year and the technologies that will be commercialized in 2020.

The Rise of 5G in 2020

5G is known as the fifth-generation cellular network technology. It’s expected to be as much as 100 times faster than the present 4G systems, with up to 25 times lower latency or lag time, and as many as one million devices supported within one square kilometer. The foundation of 5G can be summarized in five technologies: millimeter waves, small cell networks, massive MIMO (multiple inputs, multiple outputs), beamforming, and bytes full-duplex.

The will reshape many industries and more certainly than not impact the world of UI/UX by making it gravitate towards speed, personalization, and creative designs.

Three Big UI Trends for 2020

1. Mindful design

Whether you make your own pictures of your business and clients or make your own illustrations (comics, designs, and such), this next year will gravitate around authenticity. Such services as stock photos and templates will take a step back and will not help businesses convert as much.

2. Complex illustrations and motion effects

In 2019, due to responsive designs and the limitations of 4G, using complex illustrations and motion effects was an actual problem as it hurt your website rankings and didn’t load at all for some users. With the arrival of 5G, we should forget that as everyone will be free to customize their website or app without encountering any of the previous issues.

3. Dark themes on the rise

Mojave started it, and this year we saw the dark-themed Instagram taking the market by storm as many apps decided to follow that wave. In 2020, this trend will only reinforce itself as many big companies have announced the release of dark-themed updates.

Three Big UX Trends for 2020

1. No more loading screens (finally)

Any UX designer is familiar with this concept. When a page takes more than a couple of seconds to load, it’s common courtesy to place a loader to inform the users about the process. In 2019, we saw a rise in creative loaders and it was already a big change from the generic ones. Again 5G is going to play a big role here in making loaders become extinct as the speed will allow any device to load instantly and properly.

2. Voice will only be reinforced

As a big believer in voice technology, I firmly believe that we are on the edge of seeing the final stage of the maturation of this technology. A lot of searches are done through voice now, and with the sales of devices like Alexa and Amazon Echo we’re sure that that’s only the start. So designers are ready to integrate voice into the majority of your designs.

3. Augmented reality and virtual reality

TiktTok, Sephora, and many similar applications are used by consumers to fulfill their daily needs from the convenience of their homes. To meet these multiplying demands, AR and VR will add more advancements to make life more convenient and easier as per end users’ needs.
