Why I Created a Fake Accounts Person for My Small Business
Dave from accounts has entered the chat — and he’s not here to play nice
At the age of 23, I started a small advertising and publishing company in my hometown.
It was moderately successful and over my 5 years in business, I built up a nice little client base, however, it was just me. All alone, working off a crappy laptop, perched precariously on top of a badly put together IKEA desk tucked into the corner of my studio apartment. I suppose that’s the beauty of the modern age — you don’t need the big flashy office or sizeable overheads. To outsiders, it appeared to be a fully professional and even rather grand enterprise, well at least grander than it really was.
Again, I was 23, with minimal experience and so to say I was naive is a major understatement but, like all good entrepreneurs, I learned as I went along. I think anyone who has started a business before will appreciate the challenges associated with that first year in particular, but bit by bit, I worked through them.
Except for one.
People weren’t paying.
It’s not like I wasn’t bringing in the clients, I was.
And they were agreeing to my rates.
