TIK TOK TACTICS
Why TikTok Will Take Over In 2020
No, it’s not full of weird videos produced by 13-year old girls
In the past few weeks, I spent tons of hours analyzing social media trends and figuring out which platforms could dominate in 2020.
It didn’t take long until I realized that there is only one major player I should focus on: TikTok.
And if I had to give one piece of advice that might change your social media successes, it would be the following:
Immediately start using TikTok.
No matter if you are a blogger, coach, writer, or business owner of any kind, TikTok can be your golden nugget to dominate in your niche — with much less effort than on any other social platform that is currently out there.
What TikTok Is All About
TikTok is a video platform.
It’s an app that allows you to create and share short videos of max. 60 seconds which are usually featured by music in the background.
Through various tools like music, filters, and other features, creators are empowered to produce fancy, addicting videos with ease.
Just like Instagram made it easy to create great pictures through filters, TikTok is enabling (young) people to create engaging videos quickly.
While most people know TikTok for its funny, weird videos, produced by 13-year-olds, the platform holds much more potential. Especially for businesses.
TikTok Is Super Addictive
If you are on Facebook or Instagram, you might know that time can fly once you start scrolling through the news feed.
However, TikTok is even more addictive than Facebook or Instagram.
Those who are on TikTok averagely spend 55 minutes on the app, which is very interesting because it shows the great potential for marketers.
TikTok users are mostly binge-watching lots of videos once they are on the app.
I didn’t really understand why this happens until I first started using the app myself. If I lose control, I might end up wasting half an hour watching videos without even realizing it.
Don’t believe it? Download the app and try it out by yourself.
TikTok enables its users to express themselves through various creative ways, which makes it so popular among young users — not only to produce but also to consume content.
In contrast to Instagram, TikTok is not about perfect aesthetics but entertainment and valuable content.
TikTok profiles don’t look perfect but rather engaging.
Of course, excellent video quality is no disadvantage, yet some of the biggest creators on the platform are young teenagers who are producing videos in their bedrooms — and it works. They are getting millions of views, and they have a massive influence on their followers.
TikTok’s Mission as a Company
TikTok itself defines its purpose as the following:
“To capture and present the world’s creativity, knowledge, and precious life moments, directly from the mobile phone. TikTok enables everyone to be a creator, and encourages users to share their passion and creative expression through their videos.”
Why You Must Care About TikTok
In contrast to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, and any other social network you might know, TikTok is not U.S based.
The app was initially created in China and is known there as DOUYIN.
In 2017, ByteDance launched the app for all markets outside of China.
For most people, it seems as if the application came out of nowhere, yet it was first released in 2016, and already more than half a billion people are using the platform.
As of October 2019, the app is available in 155 countries and 75 languages.
These statistics already point out that TikTok can’t be ignored anymore.
TikTok is undoubtedly the fastest growing social media platform that is currently out there.
While platforms like Instagram and Facebook are not only oversaturated but also not supporting the organic reach of content creators anymore, the opposite is true for TikTok.
Even with zero followers, you can go viral and reach millions of people.
The very first video I uploaded got more than 30,000 views within a few days without any preparation beforehand.
No other social media platform allows you to go viral and reach such a significant amount of people so quickly.
The incredibly organic reach makes TikTok especially attractive for those who want to reach a big audience.
With more than 800 million monthly active users and an incredible growth rate, TikTok is definitely the hottest platform that currently exists.
The popularity of the app exploded and spread around the world in a short timespan.
Since Q4 2018, the popularity of TikTok skyrocketed, and it’s topped worldwide download charts ever since.
In Q1 of 2018, TikTok was the most downloaded app in the Apple app store, with more than 45.8 million downloads.
In total, the app already crossed the one billion mark of downloads.
Another impressive number is that nine out of ten users are using the app multiple times per day.
And 90 % of all users are using the platform daily.
These are great numbers that indicate that the user community of the platform, in general, is a very active one.
What helps TikTok in standing out compared to other platforms is that it is more an entertainment platform instead of a lifestyle one.
Plus, the attractiveness lies in the fact that practically anyone can create content as the app is incredibly simple to use.
An Incredible Growth Rate
Besides the number of active users, the growth of the platform is exploding right now.
In the first quarter of 2019, TikTok was the most downloaded app, which totaled over 188 million new users.
Compared over a year (Q1 2018), the app has grown by 70%, which is a remarkable number.
It’s also the most downloaded app in the apple app store
With over 33 million downloads in a single quarter, TikTok was the most downloaded app in the Apple app store at the beginning of 2019.
More Than 1.5 Billion App Installations
Besides all the impressive numbers above, TikTok also crossed an essential benchmark of one billion app installations on the Apple App Store and Google Play worldwide.
According to Sensor Tower, the app downloads are even more than 1.5 billion by now.
90% of Users Are Accessing the App Daily
That’s a great number because three-quarters of all apps are downloaded, accessed once, and forgotten.
However, due to its addictiveness, TikTok gets lots of attention from its users.
Plus, compared to other platforms, TikTok users are very active on the app.
According to the Globalwebindex, 68% of TikTok users watch someone else’s video, and 55% upload their own videos.
The TikTok Audience
Yes, the audience on TikTok is still a young one.
But that’s precisely how Facebook started as well.
As you might know, Facebook started as a platform for college students.
And guess what, throughout the years, the demographics widely changed. By now, Facebook is the platform for moms, dads, or even grandparents. You won’t succeed in reaching young people on Facebook anymore.
The same happened with Instagram.
Guess who the first ones were on the platform?
It was young people who made selfies in front of mirrors and tried out all the fancy filters.
The same is going to happen with TikTok.
The demographics are going to shift, older people will start using the platform and those who are building their audiences now are going to win.
According to Globalwebindex, currently, 41% of TikTok users are aged between 16 and 21 years.
And two-thirds of TikTok users are under 30 years old.
Of course, with a radically increasing number of total users, the demographics are changing. However, if your target audience is a younger one, TikTok is already inevitable for your business.
While it might take some time (probably not very long) until older generations will use TikTok massively, it is already the #1 social platform to reach a young audience.
For example, in the U.S., the number of adults on the platform grew by 5.5 (!) times in just 18 months. This growth rate is unique and indicates a bright future for the application.
Only 4 % of American Marketers Are on TikTok
While the number of users is increasing tremendously, still only very few marketers are getting involved in TikTok.
This means that those who are already knowing TikTok well are going to win.
According to estimations, it won’t take long until TikTok gets much more attention from brands but also older generations. Once this shift happens, those marketers who already know the platform will celebrate a huge win.
Thus, if you are an online marketer, you might want to dive deep into TikTok before everyone is doing it.
7.6% of the World’s Population Is Following the Top 50 Creators on TikTok
Sounds crazy, right?
According to mediakix, the top 50 creators on the platform have more followers than the populations of Mexico, Canada, the U.K, Australia, and the U.S. combined.
Meaning that the top influencers of TikTok are already followed by more than 587 million people worldwide. These people have an incredible influence on the buying behavior of their followers, making TikTok inevitable for brands.
In-App E-Commerce Is Already a Big Thing on TikTok
While it took Instagram years to integrate the shopping feature, it is already available on TikTok.
Users can browse products that are associated with specific topics and challenges without even leaving the app. This feature serves as a small, mobile-optimized e-com website, and of course, it helps to increase product awareness among users.
TikTok is not replacing any existing platform.
It’s a whole new world with a unique experience, currently still focusing on young people.
The creators of the app know that GenZ is more critical than ever before, and they focus on a young target group on purpose.
Young people dominate trends in the world of social media.
Even though TikTok might be competing with the big players, it is serving a different purpose.
Never before has it been so easy for content creators to be creative.
All the numbers above are speaking for TikTok, and its growth can’t be ignored.
Just as it was with Instagram, those who are already engaging and creating on the platform now will be the big winners once the crowd starts using TikTok.
You might want to stay safe and keep focusing on Instagram or Facebook, yet, surely, TikTok is the next big thing.
