Seth’s Draft Grades
Dats Good Schmaaat — C
Picks: 1.01 — Leonard Fournette (RB, Jaguars) 1.02 — Mike Williams (WR, Chargers) 3.01 — Malik Hooker (S, Colts) 3.05 — Chris Godwin (WR, Buccaneers) 4.01 — Jonathan Allen (DE, Redskins)
To start this draft, Dats Good Schmaaat made not an exciting pick but a good one. As most expected, Fournette went first overall. Jordan followed that up by picking a wide receiver at 1.02, which I thought was the right move. However, I believe he took the wrong guy. Especially after he has now been declared to be sitting out all of camp, Mike Williams seems to be the wrong choice. Aside from the injury concerns, I am much more a fan of Corey Davis’ situation. Malik Hooker is the other questionable pick here. With five defensive backs already on the roster, including a top ten and two top thirty players, Jordan would have been better of addressing one of his other positions of need. More running back or wide receiver depth could have helped here. He was lucky that Godwin was still available midway through the third. This was his best pick of the draft in terms of value at position in my opinion.
Frank Lucas — B+
Picks: 1.03 — Christian McCaffrey (RB, Panthers) 2.02 — Juju Smith-Schuster (WR, Steelers) 4.02 — Ishmael Zamora — (WR, Raiders) 4.03 — Kenny Golladay (WR, Lions)
Frank Lucas had a very solid draft this year. McCaffrey was tied for number two on my board. I think he will be a beast in ppr and word out of camp is that he is already impressing. I think 2.02 was a little high for Smith-Schuster. I probably would have gone with Kamara or Foreman here to get some more running back talent. This is my biggest knock on Jamie’s drafting. Wide receivers are the backbone of any strong fantasy team but with Austin, Treadwell, and White on the roster already, I would have tried to snag one more running back. Zamora and Golladay are both good pickups for that price. Zamora could be set up to be the eventual replacement for Crabtree and Golladay has continued to climb up various fantasy draft boards.
Meals on Wheels — B+
Picks: 1.04 — Corey Davis (WR, Titans) 1.05 — Dalvin Cook (RB, Vikings) 3.04 — Marlon Mack (RB, Colts) 4.05 — Jeremy McNichols (RB, Buccaneers)
Meals on Wheels had another solid draft. The fact that Davis was available had 1.04 created a no brainer pick. Davis was my top wide receiver this year. His natural talent combined with being destined to be the number one guy for the budding star Mariota should have resulted in Davis being the number one or two pick. I do not agree with the Dalvin Cook pick at 1.05. I would have liked to see Mixon taken here. I think Mixon has more talent than Cook and I also believe his road to starting is a little easier. The rest of his draft is not bad. For the last pick I would have consider have grabbing either a defensive back or linemen to help grab some potential on the back end.
Hubba Bubba Max — A-
Picks: 1.06 — Joe Mixon (RB, Bengals) 1.07 — O.J. Howard (TE, Buccaneers) 2.09 — Jamal Adams (S, Jets) 3.03 — Myles Garrett (DE, Browns) 3.09 — James Conner (RB, Steelers) 3.10 — Derek Rivers (DE, Patriots) 4.07 — T.J. Watt (LB, Steelers)
Hubba Bubba Max had my second-best draft of the year. When I first looked at his picks, I questioned the amount of defense he drafted. But after taking a look at his roster, Mixon and Howard were fantastic pickups to cover his major holes on offense. Plus, he got James Conner at the end of the third. He could end up being a great pick if a team other than the Steelers somehow gives Bell the money he is looking for. Adams and Garrett were both great pickups, being two of the top talents in the NFL Draft. Rivers has some great potential, especially since Ninkovich announced his retirement today. I know Watt was a homer pick so I thank Max for not taking Foster at 4.07.
A-Ron the Conqueror — A
Picks: 1.08 — Kareem Hunt (RB, Chiefs) 2.04 — Alvin Kamara (RB, Saints) 2.06 — Zay Jones (WR, Bills) 3.06 — Curtis Samuel (WR, Panthers) 4.04 — Derek Barnett (DE, Eagles) 4.08 — Jarrad Davis (LB, Lions)
A-Ron the Conqueror has the honor of being my favorite draft this year from top to bottom. He needed help pretty much anywhere and got it for the most part. Hunt and Kamara I had tied in the second tier of running backs with Perine. The number two receiver spot is basically Zay Jones’ to lose in Buffalo. Samuel projects to be the number three guy in Carolina but I think he definitely has potential to overtake Devin Funchess before too long. I was pretty upset that Davis went two picks before me. Derek Barnett has a lot of competition at the DE spot in Philly, but considering the capital the Eagles spent on him they must have a plan. Overall, very well done Aaron.
Wham Bam Thank You Cam — C+
Picks: 1.09 — David Njoku (TE, Browns) 2.07 — Joe Williams (RB, 49ers) 3.08 — Carlos Henderson (WR, Broncos)
Wham Bam Thank You Cam had a fairly average draft in my opinion. Njoku was essentially best player available and it helps that there was a need at TE for Eric.In my opinion, Joe Williams was a reach at 2.07. I had multiple running backs and wide receivers higher on my board than Williams. 3.08 was right in line with the area I had Henderson being taken.
Oklahoma City Seahawks — B-
Picks: 1.10 — John Ross (WR, Bengals) 4.06 — Patrick Mahomes (QB, Chiefs)
It is pretty hard to evaluate a draft with only two players. The Oklahoma City Seahawks made a pretty smart best player available pick by going with John Ross but I would have considered taking one of the second tier running backs here. I do not think it was necessary to make a pick on Mahomes. I would probably have gone defense here.
Fookin Salamandas — B+
Picks: 2.01 — Samaje Perine (RB, Redskins) 2.03 — Evan Engram (TE, Giants) 2.10 D’Onta Foreman (RB, Texans) 3.02 — Jamal Williams (RB, Packers) 3.07 — Cooper Kupp (WR, Rams) 4.10 — Reuben Foster (LB, 49ers)
It’s always hard to analyze my own team while trying to remain as neutral as possible. The short answer is that I believe I strengthened my weak areas and I got my guys which makes me happy. Perine at 2.01 is right around his ADP looking at various rankings. Engram was a little high but I felt like I needed some more than just Ebron for insurance behind Gronk. I was surprised Foreman fell to me at the end of the second. He has a lot of potential and Miller has been super impressive in Houston, but that could be due to quarterback play as opposed to skill. Williams at 3.02 could be a reach but I liked the lack of real competition in Green Bay other than Ty Montgomery. Cooper Kupp is the pick I regret the most. Looking back I would have gone for Ishmael Zamora. I thought Reuben Foster as the final pick of the draft was a great get for the guy. He was in conversation for best linebacker of the draft until his shoulder injury and all reports have him being ready for training camp.
Wayne Gallman 2017 — D
Picks: 2.05 — Wayne Gallman (RB, Giants)
With his one pick WG2k17 made the biggest splash in the draft by picking Wayne Gallman at 2.05. Before Paul Perkins got hurt this was my worst pick of the draft. Now, it is my second worst pick of the draft. There were rookies with much more potential both for immediate impact and the future that were still on the board at this point. For example, Zay Jones went at 2.06. Since Perkins got injured, Gallman has a better chance to make a name for himself. However, the Giants backfield is very crowded with 7 running backs other than Gallman. The silver lining is that John will not have to work very hard to keep up with all of his rookies this offseason.
Sherleeze — D+
Picks: 2.08 — Jabrill Peppers (S, Browns) 4.09 — Taco Charlton (DE, Cowboys)
Here is another two player draft, this time by Sherleeze. To be short, I am not a fan of this draft. Besides the fact that 2.08 was a little early for drafting defense in my opinion, if Chris insisted on starting with defensive backs he went with the wrong one. I think both Adams and Hooker will have better careers than Peppers. Sherleeze is built to win now and I think he could have found someone better to help him in that direction.Taco Charlton is not a bad pick at 4.09 but does not do enough for me to really change this grade either way.
