It’s very easy to buy physical goods — we don’t even need to get out of the house — they will be delivered to our doors. This turns out to be just as dangerous as it is convenient.

Until not so long ago, I would very much enjoy buying new “toys”: headphones, speakers, phones, kitchen electronics, shoes, jackets, various tools, etc. I was mostly having a great time collecting all of these until I had to move houses 3 times during a single year, spent lots of time thinking about what really makes me happy, and had made some conclusions about spending money on physical goods.

Here is a short list of things you might want to consider before going through with your next purchase, all collected from my past experiences. By now, this checklist has become a habit and allowed me to save lots of time and resources, contributing to a simpler, more flexible life.

Space Usage

Especially relevant for those living in larger cities and smaller apartments, the impact on space is easy to underestimate.

Before buying your next amazing home speaker, consider where you would place it. In addition to that, should you want to keep the original packaging, think about where you would put that giant cardboard box your new device came in?
