The Homestretch is Here!
Rebuilding a Beautiful, Vacant Historic Detroit Home (Episode 27)
Floors are complete!
After many weeks of work and waiting, our floors are finally finished this week! They look really beautiful and we are both really happy with the color. With this stage of the process over, we can now confidently say that we’ve touched essentially every surface of the home from flooring to electrical, plumbing, insulation, AC, radiators, glass repair, and on! The home has made an amazing transformation these past 9 or so months and it finally feels like we’re getting close to a move in day!
What’s Next?
This is constantly our question to our contractors now that we’re reaching the finish line. Tile arrived this week and so today, our tile subcontractor arrived to begin work on our Master Bath and Guest Bath tile work. This work will take roughly 2 weeks to complete, so Cal and Christian prepped the house by laying down ram board on our new floors to protect them. Soon we will also see the last of our plaster work get finished. We are recreating some of the plaster details onto the curved ceiling of our breakfast nook, and we found a good team of professionals to tackle that work for us.
On the 17th, we are scheduled to have our Amish custom-made cabinets arrive and be installed. This is something Brandon and I are truly excited about. We haven’t seen the cabinets in person, so it’ll be a huge surprise for the both of us and we hope everything installs smoothly!
Planning the Finishing Touches
Finally, Brandon and I are able to start focusing on the little details. We’re shopping for counter tops, looking at paint colors, and discussing layout of furniture. We had an in-home consultation with Crate and Barrel who took measurements and are giving us suggestions on layout and furniture pieces. I am not sure how useful the consultation will be, but I suppose we will have to see! The service was fairly easy and inexpensive, so we figured it was worth giving it a shot. I also had a local Detroit friend come by who works as an Interior Designer in the city come. She will be taking a stab at helping us figure out our layout as well and we’re really excited to see her suggestions!
From the start, Brandon taught himself AutoCAD in order to layout the house’s measurements. This has been extremely helpful to have all of our measurements just a tap away on our phone no matter where we are.
Just yesterday, Brandon and I visited the University of Michigan’s Department of Music Education to check out their Piano Sale. It was a really cool experience and having this CAD on hand helped us to make sure that the piano we chose would fit in our space. Brandon found a wonderful used Yamaha Grand Piano and we decided to pull the trigger on it. We can’t wait to enjoy it in our new home! He has played piano for many years, but never had the space for anything but an electric piano, so I am so glad we found a beautiful instrument to bring into our home!
In our spare time beyond planning colors and layout, we are continuing to work on our staircase spindles and will soon start repainting the risers of our grand staircase. Our spindles have been completely stripped so I hope that this weekend we can prime and paint them.
