Rebuilding a Beautiful, Vacant Historic Detroit Home (Episode 49)

So these past few weeks have been a blur! The last few days before the UDCA Home Tour were all about the finishing touches. We finished painting our garage and back door, cleaned like crazy, and prepared for the around 1,000 guests we expected to walk through our doors! We were also honored to have Detroit Curbed’s Editor, Robin Runyan, visit us for a final reveal, interview, and photo shoot of our home.

Robin’s article on our place is fantastic, and features some amazing before and after sliding images that really bring this project home. For those who missed the home tour, check out Robin’s article to really see how this project has transformed since the beginning. We also recently were contacted by The Detroit News and are expecting to have an article with them in the near future. So What’s Next?

Airbnb!

Well, now you can actually come see the house for yourself and stay with us! With all of the interior work largely complete, and these nice new pictures we received from Curbed, it feels like a good time to try out welcoming people into our home! We’ve listed our two guest bedrooms on Airbnb, and if you ever need a place to stay in Detroit, or know a friend coming into town, send them our way!

But Wait, We’re Not Done?

Well, now we are moving our focus to a lot of outdoor work. We have work to do on everything from the garden, gutters, patio, storm windows, our garage, and more that will keep us busy for the days to come leading up to Winter. We also longer term are excited to do some work on our basement’s finished space, where our basement’s Terrazzo floors would look gorgeous if refinished as well as some maintenance work like refinishing our guest bath cast iron tub and sink’s porcelain finish. Suffice it to say, while homes like these are never “done” we at least feel like we can take a breath and relax as we tackle these smaller projects day by day at our leisure.

A Thank You to Our Subcontractors

With all of our experiences over these past two years, we definitely think it appropriate to thank all of our awesome sub-contractors who helped us make this place a home.

Most of all we want to thank our General Contractors Calvin and Christian Garfield of Maxwell Construction.

Without the hard work and knowledge of these two, Brandon and I couldn’t have finished this project. If you are ever in need of skilled workers who are trustworthy, skilled, and a joy to work with, look no further… seriously, don’t waste your time, they’re the best.

I will continue to make posts here on Between 6 & 7 going forward, and keeping you all updated of our goings on. But rather than every other week or so, the frequency of our posts will surely slow down. I still enjoy posting on our Facebook page too, with articles and news about our amazing neighborhood, The University District, as well as Detroit development news that I come across. I am also in talks with doing similar sorts of articles/updates for our contractors, Calvin and Christian, to share what awesome new projects in Detroit they are working on next, and helping them develop a fresh new website.

I’ll send you off with some awesome pictures from our recent trip to Iceland we took last week with some of our neighbors. We had an amazing time exploring the wilderness by car and foot and taking a break after so much work on our home.
