Formula E to race in China in Season Five
Formula E announces a new ePrix in China ahead of the Fifth Season
An announcement today by Formula E confirms that the series will race in mainland China for the first time since Season 2 in 2019 on a brand new circuit in Sanya. If like me, you’re geographical knowledge of China is sub par, Sanya is the southernmost city on Hainan Island, located a little over 650km from Hong Kong as the crow flies. This will be the first time China has featured on the Formula E calendar since the season opener of season 2 in 2015, and only the second country to feature a race in more than one city, the USA being the other (Long Beach, Miami and New York).
Speaking about the prospects of the new venue, Formula E Founder and CEO Alejandro Agag said “bringing the ABB FIA Formula E Championship back to Mainland China is an important step in a key territory for the series and a market that’s instrumental to the continued development and uptake of electric vehicles globally. Sanya is an idyllic setting for a Formula E race — not just with the stunning views on the shores of the South China Sea — but for the ongoing efforts of Hainan in the field of electric mobility, which has led to Sanya boasting the best air quality of any city in China.”
The new venue will, subject to approval, host round 6 of Season 5, and take place on March 23rd, just two weeks after Hong Kong which has been moved to round 5 for next season. This means next season will feature 13 races with the addition of Monaco, a race in Saudi Arabia and a round TBA.
