Diamond Jack by Rachel Kim — Assignment 01 Promoting Good Animation
Diamond Jack by Rachel Kim is a charming short film. The film has a soundtrack and style which are nostalgic. There are many different elements in this short film, which show examples of exemplary animation. The contrasting styles, story, color palette, and the musical accompaniment make an interesting short film.
Starting out with the design, The backgrounds are created with a painterly style and a warm color palette that makes the viewer feel cozy in a way. The settings throughout the film seem painted due to the texture making it interesting to the viewer. The line work is not refined, but that seems to match the high energy which is present throughout the short film. However, the line work could have been cleaner during some of the close ups as seen in the shot of Jack escaping.

The story itself follows Jack as they steal a bomb disguised as a diamond in order to save the patrons and civilians. However, Jack must do this while being chased by the police as they do not know that the diamond is really a bomb. The artist, Rachel Kim does a great job foreshadowing to the reader that jack is not really a villain during the chase with a short clip of the slot machine showing a diamond and two bombs at 1:27.

The song “The villain I Appear to be” composed by Conner Spiotto, follows the flow of the film perfectly. Starting off slow to set the scene and going quickly throughout the chase which takes place in the middle of the film. The instrumental matches the movement in the film very well and on the other hand, the lyrics give the viewer some background info on what type of character/person Jack is.
Overall, I think the elements of the short film were put together very well and holds the audience attention for the entire time. The simplistic design, music, and plot leaves the viewer wanting to see more of Jack’s endeavors.
