Entrepreneurship: JULIA ADENEY THOMAS: NUCLEAR PAIN AND HUMANITARIAN PHOTOGRAPHY
Julia Adeney Thomas has very impressive credentials as far as a resume goes. She is Associate Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame and winner of the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians’ award for best article of 1999. She has won a John Fairbanks prize in East Asian History, which is offered annually for an outstanding book in the history of China proper, Vietnam, Chinese Central Asia, Mongolia, Manchuria, Korea, or Japan, substantially after 1800. She’s been invited to give speeches at multiple prestigious institutions both here in the United States, and Internationally. She is an editor and co-editor, as well as an author of many books and articles including one of her more recent articles titled, “Using Japan to Think Globally: The Natural Subject of History and Its Hopes.” She has demonstrated an immense sense of altruistic journalism and seeks to better the world by challenging global powers, and climate crisis.
In her presentation that I attended she used documentary photographs, most by a man named Morizumi Takashi, to demonstrate the horrors of radio-active weapons and nuclear catastrophes. I would argue that Humanitarian Entrepreneurs are the most respectable types of entrepreneurs the world has to offer. Her motives are not to make profit for ones visions, but rather to end the suffering of other, young and old, all across the globe in her admirable pursuit for peace and betterment of mankind.
From her presentation I learned of a few new humanitarian photographers that share the same concerns for the world as I do. The most influential one in particular, the photographer named Morizumi Takashi. After seeing a lot of his work, I have decided that he will be the photographer that I will be doing my research project on in my photography class. His photographs move me and inspire me to continue to strive to make the world a better place using art as a medium, just as he has. Connecting to people like me just shows how great an effect that Ms. Thomas has in her entrepreneurial pursuit to change the world. In her own ways she has manage to gather great amounts of support and empathizers from all over the world who all wish to see her vision of the world come to fruition. For this she can easily be credited as an entrepreneur of the highest class.
