Promoting good animation
“The Present” animation created by Jacob Frey I believe is a very good example of good animation. This short film took my heart away the moment it started. I think that the sounds are extremely well done. He made sure to include every little sound as possible from the clicking on the gaming remote, too the ruffle noises when the puppy runs and rolls around on the carpet, also to the heavy breathing noises from the puppy makes it truly believable.
What really amazes me is the story concept. It’s one of those you have to watch till the very end in order to understand everything the whole story. You would first think that this is just like a typical young boy who would rather play video games than playing with his new puppy. The little puppy is determined to play ball with his new master. The whole puppy scene of him playing with his ball and getting stuck in the box shows how innocent and curious puppies are.

It isn’t until around 2:47 until you get the full understanding of the film. At this part of the film, there seems to be pause where you hear clanking noises and the puppy seems concern. It makes you think what’s could possibly be wrong seeing that the boy was smiling a second ago. At 2:51 is when you can notice what’s up when you see the boy’s shadow kind of bouncing up and down and not smooth movement.

Then at 2:56, you realize that the boy is missing leg just like the puppy. That’s when it all starts coming together. Why the boy rejected the puppy moments after being excited about it. Him also saying “She got a be kidding me” which now makes it clear that his mom picked that particular dog for him. I love having that moment of understanding because you never saw it coming making you appreciate the film even more.Overall, this short film blew me away. From the way the blurred-out background images and focused on what we needed to see was a nice touch along with all the detail in the setting matched up with reality. Some little things that threw me off was some motion that I didn’t feel fit the flow of the video. The box opening popped out way too fast from the smooth flow everything out. Even when he threw the dog onto the ground seemed a too dragged out but that was me being nit-picky. This was just all around a great short film animation.
