The Commercial for Hotel Transylvania

Aside from being Genndy Tartakovsky’s masterpiece, Hotel Transylvania is a great example of how far 3D animation can be pushed. Since it is a professionally animated film, it will clearly utilize all 12 principles of animation, but 3 principles this film emphasizes greatly are squash and stretch, anticipation, and overlapping actions.

Squash and stretch can be found in just about every scene, but one that particularly stands out to me is when female Frankenstein is talking about how loud humans are. She emphasizes her point by screaming “they’re very loud”, but as she does, she squashed and stretches her body to match her tone.

Female Frankenstein squashing and stretching to emphasize her words.

The second principle Hotel Transylvania uses for every action the characters take is anticipation. Their over exaggerated anticipation adds humor and power into the actions, such as this bell boy zombie smashing through the roof of a carriage to grab their bags.

The last principle that is done very well in this film is over lapping action. You can find it being applied to the capes, hair, clothes, and even this bingo ball mixer filled with tiny skulls. The over lapping action separates the characters from their clothes and the objects they carry while adding an aesthetically pleasing silkiness to the actions they take.

If you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend you go see it not only for the animation, but for the great set designs and humor.
