My Journey to Greatness
By Bryan Achiampong ‘18
Change.
Change excites our inner core.
Change sometimes comes with a lot of fear, but often it brings excitement. Even more important, change brings new opportunities, there for each of us to make the most of. Change clothes us in new experiences, and challenges us to question the routines we have built in our daily lives. Change is apparel. This apparel of change for me, right here, right now, is Ashesi.
I remember my first day here like it was was an hour ago. The fear of the reception that would greet me, the number of friends that I would have, the person I would become and the nauseous feeling from the bumpy road to Berekuso. When I arrived at Ashesi at noon, I realised I had arrived too early for the fashionable grand entrance I had planned. But as we pulled up in front of the student dorms, I could feel my new chapter had started.

It was the warmest reception I had ever received. This was where I wanted to be for the next four years. As I walked in, the nicknames followed — from the infamous chorus of ‘Alfred and Estalynn’s brother’ (what I get for having two older siblings already at Ashesi), to ‘the fresh guy’ (which I admit I liked), and the new one that is now growing on me, the ‘guy who dresses well’. It was refreshing!
I am on the horizon of diversity, and Ashesi gives me the faith and courage to believe that anything is possible.
It’s been two months now. I am a full-fledged student at Ashesi, and I am proud of how much I have learned and accomplished already. My journey to greatness has already started. From being the Public Relations Officer for the YFM Campus Expression Fan Club to being a model for the Ashesi Photography Club (and receiving a nod of approval from inspirational fashion designers such as Kwaku Bediako!), I feel unstoppable.

I have now been nominated for an excellence award at the 5th Ashesi Student Council Ubora Awards, easily my most gracious acknowledgement so far. The awards ceremony will celebrate students who have represented Ashesi’s ideals of excellence, and even receiving a nomination is a big step for me.
I, Bryan Achiampong, am a freshman at Ashesi University College. I am on the horizon of diversity, and Ashesi gives me the faith and courage to believe that anything is possible and success is found in effort.
I have started my journey to greatness. I hope you are inspired to start yours.
