Security In And Around The Blockchain

Although blockchain is often discussed in parallel with security (for storing data using sophisticated math and innovative software rules that are difficult for hackers to manipulate), lately, there has been a significant amount of attacks on even the best-designed blockchain systems. With so much money in circulation in the crypto-space, these systems have become a big target for skilled hackers — and we’ve already seen a lot of money lost.

At the conference in Seoul, the topic of security was discussed amongst a renowned panel of speakers with experience in the field. Watch the panel here or listen to it on Spotify.

One of the problems we face with blockchain and security is that unlike in the conventional world, where an issue arises (a security breach or losing your assets), we have an intermediary service or company that we can approach for assistance. In this case, who are you going to call?

The most important approach in the current landscape is one that is preventative — to figure out a solution before it happens.

Another big problem we face today is putting convenience over secure technology. Users are hesitant to make a concerted effort to implement basic security practices because they are merely inconvenient to most, which in turn makes them extremely vulnerable to hacks.

“I have nothing to hide”, some people might say — but what if your father does? And what if someone can get to him through you? And is this also the argument you would use when discussing your freedom of speech? I have nothing to say”.

“If you’re in the position where you have to trust someone, that’s a vulnerability point”

It’s no surprise that a large part of the audience at Summit Seoul personally knows someone that’s been hacked. The following infographic provides a broad scope of how serious this issue is in the space as well:
