Nintendo’s board members have been discussing legal action against Newell. A few hours earlier, Newell announced that he would resign. In response to this news, Kimishima ordered employees to prepare for “No-work week” actions in preparation for a New Year’s attack.

Newell had been expected to quit after his son was stabbed in an unrelated stabbing, with Newell stating that the incident was “Something not normally seen in Japan.” The murder, which took place late on the evening of January 31, would be viewed by Japanese citizens as part of the Japanese “retaliatory strikes against Gabe Newell.” The following morning, Kimishima issued another press release, stating that Nintendo’s

“…current management team was aware of this situation and is working hard to ensure that Nintendo employees are safe from Newell during the holiday period.”

This kind of statement suggests that the attack will continue through January and that Nintendo is aware of the Japanese government’s plans to punish Nintendo for this incident. And while Nintendo has always been careful about its actions, this appears to be new. Kimishima is not going to have options other than banning “American players” from its games for the following month.
