Danville, Calif. & Charlotte, North Carolina (16 March 2023): During the Mobile Integrated Health Clinical & Leadership Summit, hosted by Atrium Health and the National Association of Mobile Integrated Health Providers, Beyond Lucid Technologies (BLT) — an award-winning software company that connects the Mobile Medicine (Fire, EMS, Inter-Facility Transport, and Community Paramedicine) ecosystem for real-time information sharing among ambulances, hospitals and public health — proudly announced its selection as part of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Health Equity Initiative, which supports organizations that are developing solutions to advance health equity. Through the initiative, Amazon Web Services aims to improve health outcomes and health equity in any of the following areas: 1) increasing access to health services for underserved communities; 2) addressing social determinants of health; and 3) leveraging data to promote more equitable, inclusive systems of care.

Support from Amazon Web Services bolsters BLT’s R.U.S.H. Initiative for Children, which combines America’s first statewide, Fire & EMS-interoperable registry of pediatric medical complexity, with local clinical partnerships for longitudinal (“over time”) care, where such resources to engage the kids don’t already exist. The R.U.S.H. Initiative for Children — which stands for “Rare & Under-Served Health” — has no limitations on the clinical conditions that fall within its purview: it is designed to be a Big Tent project, with specific attention to overcoming all demographic barriers. Among the conditions in focus are cancer, epilepsy, autism, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease (SCD), diabetes, asthma, muscular dystrophy (MD), multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and rare disorders affecting metabolism, connective tissue, heart, blood, endocrine, neurocognition, and behavior health.

Maggie Carter, Global Lead, Social Impact at AWS, said: “AWS believes individual health outcomes should not depend on socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or neighborhood. Cloud technology can help address the inequities in global health that have been amplified by the pandemic. Through the AWS Health Equity Initiative, we look forward to helping Beyond Lucid Technologies and its R.U.S.H. Initiative for Children use the power of cloud computing to advance health equity and improve health outcomes.”

In an interview with Portland’s KGW News, Ben Hoffman, Professor of Pediatrics in the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine, and Director of the Oregon Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Needs, said: “There are a lot of children out there living with autism or behavioral health needs that can be triggered by people in authority or people in a uniform, loud noises like the sirens — and so having information about what could trigger that child: how, potentially, they could calm the child, what level of understanding and communications skills might be necessary — can really help those first responders attend to the child and young adult in exactly the right way.”

Daniel W. Linkins, MPH, NRP, NCEE, Regional Director of Central Shenandoah EMS in Virginia, said: “Central Shenandoah EMS Council has a vision to serve children with special healthcare needs in our region and Amazon Web Services has joined the mission. With their support, it will help us overcome one of the most significant barriers — securing the initial capital for technology infrastructure. This technology will enable an interprofessional team of caregivers to meet the unique social and medical needs of children, while ensuring that their information is secure, private and completely within the control of the parents or guardians.”

Jonathon Feit, Co-Founder & Chief Executive of Beyond Lucid Technologies, added: “The privilege of Mobile Medicine is to be part of an ecosystem of care. Rarely, if ever, do Mobile Medical professionals — fire services, ambulance services, non-emergency medical transport services, critical care paramedics, or community paramedics — respond alone. Patient are seen, and someone else needs to know. The R.U.S.H. Initiative for Children flips this dynamic: when it comes to medically complex children, their families, the kids themselves, their doctors, nurses, and school health teams know the young person’s medical history, their needs, wishes, and fears. As someone living with a neurological disability, I’ve seen firsthand what can go wrong with a child’s needs are misunderstood. From the inner city to the remotest towns, our mission is to close the insight gap during critical moments, so Responders have actionable data about the child in real-time — even before arriving on-scene — and can deliver the most informed care possible, even if the child or their family has a communication barrier. We’re thrilled that AWS has recognized the unique role of Mobile Medical professionals in bolstering health equity.”

About BEYOND LUCID TECHNOLOGIES, INC. and the R.U.S.H. INITIATIVE FOR CHILDREN

Beyond Lucid Technologies develops software to inform Mobile Medical Professionals about patients’ needs even before they arrive on-scene, then empower them to share insights across the care continuum in real-time. Our Communication Platform-as-a-Service (CPaaS) software is patented, and packed with innovations that make Fire, EMS, Non-Emergency / Inter-Facility Medical Transport (IFT), Critical Care (Ground & Air), and Community Paramedicine / Mobile Integrated Health (CP/MIH) safer, more efficient and more cost-effective. Critical focal areas include addressing substance use disorders and ensuring that context like patients’ end-of-life wishes are available to emergency responders while at the patient’s side. BLT’s “prehospital pipes” connect the dots for partner-clients across the U.S., and in Australia and Puerto Rico, with 300+ hospitals on our MEDIVIEW BEACON Prehospital Health Information Exchange network. We have been called “Silicon Valley’s Emergency Medical Technology Experts,” and deployed America’s first statewide registry of children with special health needs across Oregon. Winner of the 2019 Frost & Sullivan Technology Leadership Award for EMS Communications Platform, and awards from EMS World and the Journal of EMS. Our Co-Founder & Chief Executive was a 2020 UCSF Digital Health Hall of Fame nominee, and in 2022, he received a Civilian EMS Award from the California EMS Authority.
