The word “spooky” pertains to a lot of different things in Fort Collins. There are places with deep histories and gruesome murders. There are ghostless places but still give off freaky vibes. This subculture is on the rise and the Fort Collins community has kept a full supply of creepiness to satisfy this demand. So, instead of having a weekend at another house party or binge watching Netflix, get out there and scare yourself a little bit.

Ghost tours

Fort Collins has a bunch of tours to choose from, including a handful that involve ghosts or hauntings. The “Fort Collins Ghost Tour” is a year round tour that takes people to (and underneath) Old Town. And the tour shows off Fort Collins legends, haunted places, and all things strange. For something a little less spooky that you could take your little nephew on, there is the “Ghosts and Goodies” tour where they talk about ghosts and hauntings, but you get to stop and eat sweets along the way! If spirits are more your speed, there is the Haunted Pub Tour. Here, they take you to local bars where some historical ghoulish incidents happened. Some tours can also be private on request.

The Avery building

Where the American restaurant, The Kitchen, is today, the Avery Building is the place where two brothers started a bank but found themselves in a love triangle which resulted in one of their deaths. Before it was The Kitchen, it was a Beau Jo’s where staff reported seeing doors opening and closing by themselves and silverware flying across the table. No one at The Kitchen has seen anything yet, but it is a place rich with history and rich with potential spirits.

The Gorehound’s Playground

Another non-possessed place but one with an odd and spooky theme. The Gorehound’s Playground is a place for fans of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy where you can buy and sell memorabilia. You can go in as means to shop and look at some curious items, including posters, games, collectables, and more. Or you can go in for one of their movie nights featuring old school horror films.

Fort Collins Museum of Art

This museum lays where the Fort Collins cemetery used to be. The bodies were to be removed but through poor documentation, it is unclear how many bodies were buried there, raising the question if they were all ever removed. And when things happen in the museum without explanation, the staff will blame it on the museum ghost. So, go in for a fun art viewing and see if you marvel at anything (other than fine art.)

Walrus Ice Cream

Some of Fort Collins’ best ice cream also hosts one of its most famous ghosts. Charlie Dinnebeck, a ghost who used to own a business where Walrus Ice Cream now stands in Old Town, haunts the place. Many unexplained things will happen here, including doors opening and closing, sounds coming from nowhere and disappearing items.

Good luck exploring historical Fort Collins and embracing the weird and the spooky.
