It’s no secret; the cost of living in Fort Collins, Colorado has never been higher and housing prices and rental rates aren’t going back down anytime soon. It’s probably because the city is going through some major growing struggles— but what if I said you don’t need to be torn apart between renting a house and a flat, that you can be free of this financial pain?

If you don’t mind calling less than 400 sq. ft. home, building a tiny house might be your best bet. Don’t believe me? Here’s 7 reasons why you should build a tiny home instead of re-leasing this year.

1) THEY’RE CHEAPER… IN THE LONG RUN

While they cost a few thousand dollars upfront to build — anywhere from $10,000 to $80,000, depending on how fancy you want to get with it — the long-term costs are practically nothing. You pay no rent, very low utility bills and because of the small size, almost nothing in upkeep!

2) WHEREVER YOU GO, YOUR HOUSE GOES TOO

Ever wanted to go see Horsetooth Rock or the Flatirons without leaving the comfort of your own home? Just like a snail, some tiny homes can be modified into trailers that you can take with you everywhere. You’ll never want for a comfortable bed in the middle of the Rocky Mountains again.

3) YOU’LL BUILD CHARACTER… AND YOUR OWN HOME

The process for constructing a tiny home requires a little bit of elbow grease and a whole lot of teamwork. In the end, though, you will get bragging rights to tell everybody you know, “I built my home with my OWN TWO HANDS.”

4) IT WILL MATCH YOUR TINY CAR

Ask anybody who drives in Colorado, and they’ll all agree about what a pain it is to get around in Denver during rush hour. If you made the SMART™ choice to buy a tiny car to compensate, you should think about buying a tiny house to reduce your impact on the space you take up too. We’re running out of backyards for people… ~~~make the world your garden~~~

5) THEY’RE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

If you decide to live in a tiny house, it’s not too much more of an investment to install a tiny solar panel array on your tiny roof. For a normal-sized house, the cost of installing solar power sometimes outweighs the long-term benefits, but with a tiny house, your energy needs will be more than met with a 100 percent renewable-energy-powered tiny home.

6) NO PARTY IS TOO SMALL

Ever worry that no-one is going to show up to your tiny rager at the end of finals week? In a tiny house, even if only your mum and RA show up, you’ll have a hard time not raising the roof. Literally. Watch out for that.

7) YOU’LL JOIN A GROWING MOVEMENT ACROSS THE U.S.

Because people are looking for alternative, cheaper ways to live, Colorado is not the only state to embrace living within your means. All across the U.S. tiny homes are a growing trend that is sure to last well into the future as we figure out how to make more people fit into less space. In 100 years, we may all be living in tiny homes — so get building yours!
