Whether you’re new to town, or just want to change up your normal workout routine, here are 4 of the most popular forms of exercise in Fort Collins, and where to go to participate locally!

1. Crossfit!

Crossfit is the latest fitness trend sweeping the nation. The Crossfit mania has spread to Fort Collins, and there are six different crossfit gyms to choose from in town. The two in the Old Town area of Fort Collins are Wild Horizons Crossfit, and Old Town Athletic Club.

Crossfit combines gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more in its high intensity workouts. It is centered on functional movements that improve strength, endurance, flexibility and balance.

According to Crossfit.com, “The community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together is a key component of why CrossFit is so effective, and it gave birth to a global network of CrossFit affiliates that number over 11,000.”

2. Yoga!

There are over 20 yoga studios in Fort Collins, so if yoga is something that interests you, this is the place to try it out. The numerous studios in the area reflects the wellness-centered culture of Fort Collins. The three closest to Old Town are Old Town Yoga directly in Old Town, Om Ananda Yoga, and Treetop Yoga Therapy.

3. Group Fitness!

Group fitness is another popular trend around the nation, and here in Fort Collins. The concept has been around forever, (basically, it’s just any fitness class), but in recent years the difficulty and intensity of the classes have been amped up to compete with trends like Crossfit. Group fitness can come in a variety of forms: from Pilates, to Kickboxing, to Body Pump (choreographed weight lifting) to Zumba, there are group fitness classes and events around Fort Collins to suit any kind of athlete.

The closest establishments to Old Town, or in Old Town that offer group fitness classes are Perk! Pilates and Fitness, Old Town Athletic Club, Become Fit, Anytime Fitness, and Raintree Athletic Club.

4. Hiking and Biking!

The fourth way Fort Collins residents stay active, and probably the most popular, is by taking advantage of the local hiking and mountain biking trails. The town is planted directly next to a mountain range, so it only makes sense that outdoor activities would be popular.

Lory State Park and Horsetooth Mountain Park located approximately five miles away from Old Town are the closest hiking and biking trails. They are also some of the most favored in Colorado. Closer into town, there is also the Poudre River Trail and the Spring Creek Trail for easy biking, walking or running.

This list doesn’t cover everything that Fort Collins has to offer in terms of physical activity. That being said, there’s no reason why anyone couldn’t find their niche in the Fort Collins fitness community!
